They are acting out of character and appear to be searching for specific objects. A federal agent employs a police officer and a conspiracy theory novelist to help track them down.Switching between eras, Alcatraz focuses on the Alcatraz prison, which was shut down in 1963 due to unsafe conditions for its prisoners and guards. The show's premise is that both the prisoners and the guards disappeared in 1963 and have abruptly reappeared in modern-day San Francisco, where they are being tracked down by a government agency.Over in the UK were only a couple of episodes in, and even during the first episode I couldn't help but keep seeing similarities with my favorite (and also Abrams) show Fringe

I have to say after the first episode we were sat pondering the following, some of which has been answered here as sadly yes
- will this just be the same thing each week, another prisoner, another chase, more mystery unanswered? - will the characters actually gel at all, as they are pretty dull so far - how can this ever survive past 1 season if the above is true... - how will I ever survive past 5 episodes if the above it true...
I WANT to love this show, so I am hoping it has something else in the bag to show yet, will be sticking with it, but mainly because I am such an JJ Abrams fan...
summary
if it wasn't for the Abrams connection and Neill, I wouldn't even get to episode 3...When I first heard about "Alcatraz," I was intrigued by the notion of mixing a typical procedural with J.J. Abrams' brand of Shyamalan-style crypto-nonsense. It would, I thought, at least keep the new show from becoming the drawn-out exercise in downright silliness that "Lost" became just because it had to keep raising the stakes to create and keep secrets.
Then the show started. After a few episodes, I started to realize that in addition to plot holes that would have negated the whole series, the show also suffered from just not being that good. At least as a procedural. When I finished the season, I realized that I was right. The big "secret" had been pushed off-screen most of the time to make room for a police drama that just wasn't compelling. Having carried over the mystery to a (presumed) second season, the bulk of the show's running time is given to a big who-cares game of "will they or won't they" with this week's escaped criminal.
What is eventually revealed about the incidents of this fictitious version of Alcatraz may be fascinating. But so far, the producers have been so free with the chase-the-bad-guy part and so tight-fisted with the rest of it that I no longer really care. I'm not willing to sit through another season of a third-rate cop show just to discover the Big Truth.
