In the US, a child goes missing every 40 seconds. You never think it will happen to you. Until it does. Alone and scared, Karla Dyson (Halle Berry) is unwilling to leave the fate of her son's life in someone else's hands. When she catches a glimpse of the abductors speeding away, she decides to fight back. In a heart pounding race against time, Karla begins a high speed pursuit and will stop at nothing to save her son's life.
A mother stops at nothing to recover her kidnapped son.
So Berry plays a single mom whose world gets kidnapped and she goes on a high speed chase to get her child Back.
I loved how Halle Berry starts The movie. When she sees the kidnappers put her boy in their car she goes berserk and all of her actions where just this blind nature to project her young. To me it was absolutely real. I can see my own mom going that crazy to get me back if that happen to me. As the movie progresses it's all about watching Berry trying to keep her composure and focus so that she can figure out what to do next.
A very low key type of format with most of the action in this action thriller happening in a car going down the highway. It's very impressive how they were able to keep up the intensity of the narrative for eighty or so minutes.
I was expecting to see a movie similar to The Call, which superficially looks like the same movie on the surface, but definitely kidnap is a better movie.

Kidnap says it all with the tagline that they messed with the wrong mother. A mother will do whatever it takes to make sure their child is safe, even if it requires lots of wreck less driving, possibly injuring or killing others in car accidents. But it's the mothering instincts that nothing will ever stop them from chasing after the kidnappers. Kidnap is an intense thriller. That wastes no time in getting started with its adrenaline rush car chases literally within the first 12 minutes of the movie.
The plot follows Karla (Halle Berry), a waitress that is a single mother of a six year old Frankie (Sage Correa). After going through a divorce and fighting over a custody battle. She takes Frankie out to a small carnival and steps away to answer a phone call from the attorney. Just a glimpse later, her son is missing. She screams and searches for her son at the park. Until, she sees her son being forced into a car. She chases after them in her red mini van. Hoping to get them to stop. The kidnappers will stop at nothing. Karla will do whatever it takes to get her son back. While it is only a matter of time before she loses them. With no cell phone, limited amount of gas in her car and no weapons to stop them. Her hope is the only key to saving her son.
Kidnap is an intense thriller. It is nonstop with the car chases. The action scenes are adrenaline fueled that never slows down. The audiences are placed in Karla's perspective as she is afraid and feeling the adrenaline that she will not stop and give up. Even in car chases, she makes the deadly reverse on the freeway causing several cars to collide with each other. (Others may be put in harms way but it is her sons life that is her only concern). It is a cat and mouse thriller, she gets close to their car they roll down the window with a knife threatening her son. Which leaves her to back away for a bit. But she will not give up on losing them. The film does slow down for a minute when she enters a police station to put in a missing child report only to discover that there are several children missing for a long periods of time. Which her instincts kicks in that she can not let her son go through the same thing as others.
The film is nothing but a long adrenaline chase until the end. The film does fall back with some B thriller clichés that makes viewing the movie frustrating. Such as characters do make the stupid decisions. Like when traffic is at a stop, and Karla is right behind the kidnappers and she gets out of her car to knock on their window. Before they drive off again. Also, in another moment when her and the kidnappers are off on the side of the highway and onto a field. With both their cars facing each other. And she gets out to toss them money and letting the kidnappers walk up to her. Which she could have had the advantage of running them off. There is a lot of stupid choices made in the movie but it just gives it a set up for the characters to be in a prolonged chase. Another issue I had with the movie which I am sure the audience would be asking the same thing. Where are all highway patrol officers or police officers. It feels like there was literally no one on patrol throughout this whole chase. When there is a motorcycle officer shown, the movie makes them out to be stupid and caught between the cat and mouse chase.
Overall, Kidnap is a fairly okay thriller. It is an adrenaline rush thriller that will put you on the edge of your seat. If you could put aside some terrible script writing and B thriller clichés.
Ultimately, Kidnap is an efficient vehicle for the delivery of some lean action that's frequently weakened by a scarcely whip-smart script.
