This guide will help you to choose the best to suit your bedding needs. LABEL TERMS EXPLAINED TC = threadcount (generally, the higher the threadcount, the better quality linen it is) TOG = thermal resistance (the higher the tog value the better suited the duvet for colder nights. Low tog values are best for summer nights).
4.5 Tog. A lighter duvet which is perfect for use during the summer months. 7.5 Tog. A lighter duvet, yet heavier than a 4.5 Tog, which is perfect for use during the summer. 10.5 Tog. Perfect for Spring and Autumn, for use in a bedroom with central heating or with a blanket in winter. 13.5 Tog. 15 Tog.
Duvets come with their own scale of warmth called a 'tog' rating, and thicker doesn't necessarily mean warmer. The tog rating refers to effectiveness of a material's thermal insulation, using an ascending scale ranging from cool and lightweight low tog duvets at 1.5 and 3 tog, up to the extra cosy 15 tog duvet.
Duvets are available in a variety of "togs". Togs tell you how warm you will be when sleeping under the duvet. The lower the tog, the cooler you'll be. So you need a lower tog for Summer (4.5 tog) and a higher tog in Winter (13.5 or 15 tog). If you prefer to stick to just one duvet all year round choose a tog rating of around 10.5
21 Oct 2014 While there is no set rule for identifying the best Tog rating for you, as a general guide we recommend a 13.5 Tog for winter use, a 4.5 Tog for summer use and a 10.5 Tog as the best all-round duvet. It is recommended that quilts for babies and young children above one year should be no more than 4.5 Tog.
Choosing a Tog Rating. A tog rating is a measure of the duvet's ability to trap warm air. The higher the rating, the warmer the duvet will be. Choosing the right tog is important because if you're too hot or too cold in bed, you won't get a good night's sleep. Use the chart below as a guide. Shop all duvets
The weight, softness and warmth of a duvet depends on its tog rating and filling, and tog ratings are based on a duvet's ability to trap warm air. The higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet, with 2.5 – 7 tog perfect for spring and summer and 10.5 – 13.5 ideal for autumn and winter.
If you prefer to stay cool while you sleep, then you could choose a duvet with a lower tog rating. Depending on your own personal preference, the duvet you choose should be above all comfortable, cosy and something you look forward to coming home to at night!
