In 2010, the dangerous districts in the periphery of Paris are surrounded by walls, and the dwellers do not have school, hospital and even police in the area, which are ruled by drug lords. In the 13th District, Leito is a honest man that lives in a clean building and does not permit drug dealers nearby his neighborhood. When he destroys one million Euros in heroin of Taha Bemamud, the criminal abducts Leito's sister Lola and the corrupt police arrests Leito. Six months later, the tough and honest Capt. Damien Tomaso is assigned to find and deactivate a stolen bomb that might destroy the 13th District and the two million dwellers. Together with Leito, they have to face the gang of Taha and disclose a despicable secret behind the robbery of the bomb.
In the near future, the worst ghettos of Paris, France are literally walled off and among the worst is District B13. Controlled by the ruthless crime lord, Taha, a young righteous punk named Leïto is determined to bring him down. When the boss retaliates by kidnapping his sister, Lola, a rescue attempt by Leïto is destroyed by betrayal that gets him arrested and Lola kept in the clutches in Taha. Six months later, a crackerjack undercover cop named Damien is given a urgent mission: a neutron bomb has been stolen by Taha in District B13 which has an automatic timer function engaged and set to detonate in less than 24 hours. Now with time running out, Damien and Leïto must work together to find and stop the bomb, but there is far more to this crisis than any of the field players realize.
To be completely honest, I expected almost nothing from BANLIEUE 13 (B13). Not that I thought it was going to be bad, or that I looked down upon it or anything. It's just that I new little about this movie. I just heard that this was another action-flick produced by Luc Besson, and I was thinking something along the lines of TAXI: Pretty cool action and rather silly humor (maybe with a bit more shoot-outs this time). And since I had my share of that after TAXI 2 (I didn't even watch the third one... yet), it took a while before I finally came around to see BANLIEUE 13. Actually, it was my brother who recommended it to me (I consider his taste in movies to be pretty good, and similar to mine often). So I thought I'd give it a shot. And boy, did I have fun every single minute of the movie's short 80 minutes runtime! It's so fast-paced that you don't have the time to even think about getting bored.
In the very near future (2013, to be exact), crime-rate and gang warfare has increased to such a level that the government has build a big concrete wall around certain districts (or suburbs) of Paris. B13 obviously is the worst ghetto of them all. When crime-lord Taha Bermamud coincidentally gets his hands on a weapon of mass destruction, Capt. Damien Tomaso is send in, undercover, to locate and disarm the bomb in the center of Banlieue 13. Against all odds, he gets help from Leïto, a convict who once was born and raised in B13, and he himself has still a score to settle with Taha Bermamud.
Now the plot does owe more than a little bit to John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. But I won't hold that against it. You might even see it as a respectful nod to Carpenter's classic. Other than that, B13 tells its own story. And though it might be very thin, it does have all the enjoyable ingredients. Another good thing is, though it does carry a little social commentary, it doesn't try to be the next LA HAINE in any way. BANLIEUE 13 is here to entertain (not to make you think very hard), and it's good at that. The action mostly comes from incredibly choreographed and breathtaking fight-, shoot- and chase(mostly on foot)-sequences. Most of the acting of all the side characters is only so-so or just what you'd expect from an action-flick, but the two male leads (David Belle, in his first leading role as Leïto and Cyril Raffaelli, who started out as a stunt choreographer in the late 90's, as Damien Tomaso) are doing a damn fine job and even have a nice bit of chemistry together on-screen. But Bibi Naceri (who co-wrote the script together with Luc Besson) definitely is the most fun as Taha"Scarface"Bermamud. You can tell at times he has so much fun playing this role. The man really doesn't do anything else but sniffing lines of coke and shooting people for no reason. Great stuff! Tony D'Amario is pretty good (and even important to the story) as Taha's right hand K2 (nice haircut!). And finally, Dany Verissimo certainly is worth mentioning too, as Leïto's little sister Lola, putting down a solid performance in what could be considered a demanding role. Those are really all the characters in the story that matter, and they are all as much believable as they are caricatures (in some way or another). And that works just fine.
I should also mention that this is Pierre Morel's directorial debut. And his next step just might be directing some comfortable budgeted Hollywood action movie, if you ask me. The music is cool. The fight & chase scenes are pretty amazing. The action is faced-paced and there are quite a few twists in the light-weight plot too. I'm sure some elite group of so-called intellectuals will probably think this movie isn't even worth the time it will them take to bash it. But any other movie-lover is bound to have fun with B13. Now, this movie is nothing short of being excellent, and I liked every bit of it... just up until that very last scene. The conclusion near the end was pretty good and I liked it. But why that little epilogue there near the wall of B13?. It's just a bit too... oh, well, you'll know it when you see. Have fun with B13!
With a poll coming up on IMDbs Classic Film board for the best titles of 2004,I was happily caught by surprise, when a very kind fellow IMDber sent me a DVD of a great-looking French Action movie, which led to me getting ready to enter District 13.
The plot:
Seeing crime go out of control, the French government in 2010 decide to build a wall to separate the most crime-ridden ghettos from the rest of France.
2013 (How futuristic!):
Finding that all of his heroin supply has been destroyed by Leïto,leading gangster Taha Bemamud decides to get his revenge by kidnapping Leïto's sister Lola.Discovering that his sister has been taken, Leïto fights to get her back, but his stopped in his tracks by a group of corrupt police officers, who put Leïto in jail.
6 Months later:
Learning that Bemamud's gang has gotten hold of a nuclear bomb which is set to go off in 24 hours, the French government decide to send Capt. Damien Tomaso over the wall so that he can defuse the bomb. With Tomaso knowing nothing about what is behind the wall, Leïto is freed from prison,so that he can become Tomaso's guide.Getting behind the wall,Tomaso and Leïto soon discover that a hidden threat is being prepared.
View on the film:
Kicking things off with an explosive title sequence, director Pierre Morel and Manuel Teran give the film a blazing stylised appearance ,with Morel & Teran using rapid-fire tracking shots to show the destructive battleground of the ghettos,as the superb electronic score from Bastide Donny/ Da Octopuss and Damien Roques packs a real punch with the snappy action scenes.Whilst the stunts,(all performed with no CGI or wires) are impressive,Morel never allows them to be given the breathing space to display their full impact, due to the lightning fast editing not allowing for the viewer to fully soak up the breath- taking stunt work.
Entering the district with a firm mind-set of what is right and wrong, Cyril Raffaelli gives a very good performance as Capt. Damien Tomaso, with Raffaelli showing Tomaso's straight-edge law & order ideas get chipped away,as Tomaso finds out what the government's plan for the district are.Joining Raffaelli, David Belle gives a gritty, extremely energetic performance as street-smart Leïto,whilst co-writer (along with Luc Besson) Bibi Naceri lights up the screen as cackling baddie Taha Bemamud, and Tony D'Amario gives an excellent, animated performance as Bemamud's henchmen K2,as everyone fights for survival in the crime ridden ghetto of District 13.
It may be subtitled, and the faces may be unfamiliar, but District B13 is the best buddy action movie around.
The movements performed in District B13 are now known as 'Parkour'. David Belle is the father of this sort of movement which he recently invented in 2003. a5c7b9f00b
