Italy, 1944. As the war takes its toll on Allied forces in Europe, a squadron of black pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen are finally given the chance to prove themselves in the sky - even as they battle discrimination on the ground. It's a tribute to the unsung heroes who rose above extraordinary challenges and ultimately soared into history.
A crew of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program, having faced segregation while kept mostly on the ground during World War II, are called into duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard.
Red Tails is an original and beautifully crafted film, and profoundly deep for those who understand the context of race and power which it addresses constructively. American mainstream film should welcome more positive African American narratives and role models, and how this film beautifully forces the mainstream to confront America's racist history, while celebrating America and the noble Americans of whom we should be very proud and remember more often, especially in a time when mainstream film seems to relish in celebrating the more dysfunctional side of our American culture. We are what we eat, and we need more inspiring films with profound messages like this - that create higher expectations for ourselves and what greatness we are capable of. That the multi-layered significance of this film is lost on some critics who happen to be employed by establishment-culture newspapers, owned by the media conglomerates that refused the fund the film, is not surprising. Members of the "standard" "unmarked" group rarely experience what it means to be "non-standard" and "marked" and so of course it's harder for them to identify with the film- welcome to the club! I rarely identify with the characters or plots of so-called popular Hollywood action movies because they are usually hegemonic and hence, boring. It's ironic to me that anyone would call this film "formulaic" - when it is original in important ways. Red Tails is the first all-black film about positive African-American role models and deals with political history in a current and relevant way with compelling special effects. I will admit that the style can seem like its quickly glazing over certain aspects, or sorta zoning out or daydreaming upon certain scenes, but I respect this style of storytelling as closer to live theater in the sense that the aspects that are essential to the deeper message of the story are never compromised. A major criticism is that the film doesn't adequately tell the whole story. The film is intended as part 1 of a 3 part trilogy, and Spike Lee is apparently slated direct the prequel if the audience shows interest, at least according to the New York Times.
Lucas portrayed the Tuskegee Airmen in this film to be undisciplined, cocky, immature pilots of WWII. First of all these pilots were very disciplined, if you have ever watched the documentary on them you would of known this during this time. But in the movie they are portrayed as being these undisciplined men who did what they wanted to do. You would never of seen pilots disregard direct orders and fly off formation to go do their own thing, "aka" try and be the hero. This film is full of mistakes with the men portrayed in it and along with the aerial combat scenes.
The movie quickly looses interest when the handful of men seemingly become the reason for all the success during WWII, when in truth it was the combined efforts of all the Air Force for winning and keeping the Germans from dominating the sky's. It's typical that Hollywood can take historical fact and turn it into a historical fallacy. Nothing in this movie seemed truthful from the time period and of the Tuskegee Airmen of the time, major historical facts were thrown out when Lucas decided to make it using his sci-fi success. Should we remind Lucas that he should stick to sci-fi from now on and let movies like this up to people who know what they are doing with historical movies such as Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Clint Eastwood, at least they shown us they have successful ways of making a historical movie with great detail and truth, while maintaining a fictional character or plot line within a historically accurate time period, or by using a historically accurate story and recreating it perfectly on screen.
Perhaps the movie's most surprising feat? Somehow, the darned thing mostly works, probably because its heart is in the right place.
