Crime fighting duo Electra Woman and Dyna Girl are small-town heroes with no real powers. After a cleaning up of their little city, these two super friends are about to make it to the big time. Swept up in the star-studded glamor of Hollywood, Electra Woman (Grace Helbig) soon finds everything she's ever dreamed of: fame, fortune, a new arsenal of high-tech gadgets, the attention of every super-stud in town - but Dyna Girl (Hannah Hart) wonders what price must be paid for her newfound stardom? When the city falls into crisis, Electra Woman and Dyna Girl must battle evil dilemmas, growing egos and - of course- supervillains. If they want to save the day, they'll have to save each other first.
When it comes to updates and remakes, I'm usually not a fan. But oddly, in early 2001 when I heard that they were remaking "Electra Woman" with Markie Post, I was pretty stoked. A quick search on the net pulled back a photo of Post in costume and that heightened my enthusiasm. Unfortunately, when it came time for the networks to announce the new fall schedule, "Electra Woman" wasn't on it. The pilot episode, apparently, later made the rounds -- I just found it on YouTube. Man, the (now defunct) WB missed an opportunity with this one!
Since online videos have a short life expectancy, here's major SPOILERS: It begins at a carnival in the '80s. When an accident on a ferris wheel leaves a little girl hanging on for dear life, it's Electra Woman to the rescue! Cut to present day and the little girl, Judy (!), seeks out her heroine, and finds that Lori (Electra Woman) is now an alcoholic living in a run-down trailer. Judy tries to convince Lori to revive her act, but Dyna Girl has run off with Electra Woman's ex-husband. So Judy dons the Dyna Girl costume and books them a personal appearance at a "jewelry store" (that turns out to be a pawn shop). When thieves bust in brandishing a gun, they find their robbery attempt foiled by an out of practice Electra Woman and the new Dyna Girl! Soon Lori decides to finish college, so she imposes on Judy in her dorm room. Cut to cheesy animated wrap-up.
The pilot is pretty short, it runs around 13 minutes -- it's more of a pitch of what the show would be than your average full-length pilot. From the language alone (Post drops an f-bomb at one point), it's obvious that this version was never meant to be aired. While some purists complain that this version didn't have the family appeal of the cornball '70s series, I found that be one the pilot's strengths. Aimed at a more modern teen/young adult market, most wouldn't have been at all familiar with the '70s series. Much like the Deidre Hall version, this pilot didn't take itself too seriously, and it simultaneously payed homage to the original series and other superhero shows.
Since I've wanted to see this for more than 6 years, I figured it'd be a disappointment. But now that I've seen it, I'm even more disappointed that it didn't get picked up as a series...
First of all, I didn't know that this was a re-make of something from back in 1976. So I can't claim to be familiar with the original material upon which this is based.
I decided to watch this movie after having stumbled upon it on the Amazon market place. The synopsis for the movie sounded funny and the cover of the movie seemed to sum up the synopsis of the movie quite well. So I was intrigued. However, I didn't know that it was actually a mini-series or whatever, as it had been compiled to a single movie on DVD format.
And "Electra Woman and Dyna Girl" turned out to be a rather entertaining movie, for what it was, actually. It had a good story and it was stuffed with just the right amount of comedy and satire to keep it snappy and good to watch.
They had cast some very good talents for the movie, and both Grace Helbig (playing Electra Woman) and Hannah Hart (playing Dyna Girl) really were well-suited for these roles and individual characters. And they worked nicely on the screen side by side and individually.
And since I am not overly keen on superhero movies, it was a nice change of pace to have a superhero movie without all the fancy superhero powers. So this was essentially just ordinary people dressed up as superheroes and doing heroic stuff. Hilarious.
"Electra Woman and Dyna Girl" has enough special effects and visuals to keep it flowing, and without being over the top, as the actual superhero movies tend to do. "Electra Woman and Dyna Girl" focuses on the story and the characters, and doesn't resort to relying on jaw-dropping CGI effects.
I did enjoy "Electra Woman and Dyna Girl" and it turned out to be a nice surprise of a movie. And now that I found out that it is based on a 1976 series, I might actually go digging for the one and only season available of this particular show.
If you haven't already watched "Electra Woman and Dyna Girl", and if you enjoy a spoof on the superhero genre, then you definitely should take the time to sit down and watch this one.
