Doctor Sam Beckett led a group of top scientists into the desert to research his theory that a man could time travel within his own lifetime. Unfortunately, in order to save his funding, he was forced to enter the accelerator prematurely and vanished. He then found himself in someone else's body with partial amnesia. His only contact from home is Al, a holographic image only he can see and hear. Setting right things which once went wrong, Sam leaps from life to life, hoping each time that this is the final leap home.
Although the project isn't ready yet, Sam hops into the Accelerator and leaps. As Tom Stratton, an Air Force test pilot, Sam finds his memory Swiss cheesed, with only enough left to know that he is not where or when he belongs. Al explains that the project has gone "a little ca-ca" and that the only way Sam can leap out is by flying the X-2 to Mach 3. Instead, Sam leaps after saving Tom's life, wife and child, only to find that rather than leaping home, he's leapt into Tim Fox, a minor league baseball player in Texas, at the end of the 1968 season, where he must make the winning play in order to leap.
I give it a 5 for this reason: Betrayal.
I loved the show until i figured out it was someone's descent into sci-fi sanctimony. I confess that I had always wondered just how history "went wrong" and I felt ashamed that it took me so long to get it. Sam did not correct what "somehow" went amiss in history - he corrected his messing it up in the first place. When he leapt back he immediately cause the problems recorded in Ziggy's memory banks which were in reality just a record of all of Sam's dalliances in the past. Later came the bastard notion of what caused it all, "the evil leaper" but what in reality was just Sam's innate god complex at work. Sam's leaps caused all of the problems which he went to solve and thus fueled his ego's assumed role of savior. Poor Sam. Lucky us that he fixed his messes. And the only thing which saved the show for me was the last episode which further propelled Sam into delusional god-hood. The portion where he fixed his worst mistake: Beth and Al - THAT made it all worthwhile. The part about the leaps getting harder and Sam choking up should have made me throw a tomato at the TV but since he restored the lives of Al and Beth, my 20" Bell+Howell color TV which I inherited from my Grandmother (rest her soul) was spared the assault. I see the show as the ultimate case of Munchhausen's Syndrome. Just call me House.
I loved Quantum Leap. It was and still is my favorite show of all time. My favorite episodes were the ones involving Abagail. I gotta say, its always been a fantasy of mine to go back in time and save someone from dying when they shouldn't have. I even have a screenplay on that subject and JFK is the person I'm saving. Speaking of which, I loved the Episodes dealing with Sam leaping into Lee Harvey Oswald. I just had one problem with them. At the end of the last Oswald Episode, Sam leaps from Oswald into a Secret Serviceman just before "Oswald" pulls the trigger. Later in the hospital Sam tells Al that he couldn't change the future and save JFK, to which Al responds that he did change the future. Sam asks how. Then Al says, " Your swiss cheese brain may not remember this, but in the original history Oswald killed Jackie too." Now I'm thinking wait a minute here, Jackie wasn't killed in Dallas on November 22,1963. She died in the early 90s of Cancer I believe it was. I never did understand why they put that in there. I've always thought it was because Sam had to change the future so he could leap. Since he didn't save JFK, they gave him someone else to save. Anyway, other than that I loved that Show. I wish they'd come out with like DVD sets of entire Quantum Leap seasons.
"Mirror Image" (the series finale) was originally intended to be a season cliffhanger into the sixth season, but the show was cancelled due to low ratings in the end of the fifth season. The producers then decided to reshoot some scenes and make this episode the series finale. The result was rendering the episode a bit lacking, and leaving many questions unanswered. The ending was left open to allow for the possibility of a TV-movie, or even a theatrical film at some point. Neither ever came to pass. a5c7b9f00b
