Chapter 1 -Dishonor
Rubbing the temporal bone with both his index fingers Ichkah'kekchellselsa tried to ignore the noise and read the book laying on the table in front of him. It would go away eventually. The sound. He just had to ignore it long enough. "Ikky, maybe you should just, you know, open the door. I'm sure they will stop knocking on it then."
Ichkah'kekchellselsa moved his gaze over to the full length mirror next to the door. He stared at himself, slightly befuddled. He had expected at least a frown. Perhaps he was getting used to the situation. That stray thought rattled him a bit and a tiny crease appeared between his eyebrows. There, that was better.
Sighing Ichkah'kekchellselsa returned to the book. Gale said something more. This time, however, he managed to ignore the noises in his head and he could finally concentrate on the pages in front of him. Distress was a very good friend indeed. At least to him.
Nonetheless, concentration was something that wouldn’t stay long with Ichkah'kekchellselsa today, as the door flew open and a woman stepped in. Ichkah'kekchellselsa looked up from his book. This time his facial muscles managed to produce something that would be classified as terrifying by some. A deep crease split his dark forehead and the corners of his mouth pointed downwards. "Yes?"
She sneezed and looked around in the room, discomfort and pity clearly readable on her face. He failed to see why they couldn’t just leave him alone when they clearly didn’t want to have anything to do with him. He completely ignored Gale’s opinion about that thought. Gale wasn’t entitled to an opinion. "A bit dusty, isn’t it Ichkah'kekchellselsa?"
Throwing a glance in the direction of the mirror Ichkah'kekchellselsa turned his face down towards his book. His attention didn’t want to follow. They would’ve sent somebody else if whatever they wanted wasn’t important. They knew that he couldn’t say ’no’ to her. "Perhaps. What can I do for you, Kerkel’Uhlgykgav"
Out of the corner of his eye Ichkah'kekchellselsa watched Kerkel’Uhlgykgav. She had stopped looking around the room and was watching him. Rubbing her nose viscously. Not doing a very good job at hiding her disgust. He wasn’t even sure that she was trying.
Kerkel’Uhlgykgav must’ve come to the conclusion that Gale was staying in his head at the moment. It wasn’t pleasant, but she had however made a correct assumption. No matter how much that irked Ichkah'kekchellselsa. "The Elder’s wish to see you in the summoning hall. Right now."
Ichkah'kekchellselsa tilted his head and looked up at her. He hadn’t expected that. He had expected her to force small talk down his throat for a long while before she would finally spit out the reason why she had come to his domains. Rash wasn’t something he had expected her to be. Ever. But maybe she just didn’t see it that way. She probably wanted to flee as soon as possible so she wouldn’t catch whatever it was he had that seemed to contaminate people. He nodded without looking at her. "I’ll be right there."
Out of the corner of his eye Ichkah'kekchellselsa watched as Kerkel’Uhlgykgav nodded back and left his room. What could the Elders want with him now? Hadn’t they already punished him enough? Gale snorted and Ichkah'kekchellselsa rolled his eyes.
Sighing he stood up and looked around at his work room. It was indeed a bit dusty but it didn’t matter that much to him. Ichkah’Lopigouhikgav had always been the one to clean it. She had liked to take care of things like that. Rubbing his face he stepped over to the closet to pull out an appropriate tunic and a sheer scarf. He carefully and slowly braided the scarf into his ankle long hair. Then he draped the tunic over his shoulders.
It wasn’t until he stepped over his books and started heading for the door that he wondered why Gale was so quiet at the prospect of tormenting him when he was already down. Was Gale worried about the meeting as well? He wondered that loud enough for Gale to hear him. Gale still didn't answer. It was beyond Ichkah'kekchellselsa to worry about whatever it was that Gale could be busy planning, so he left his room and closed the door behind him.
Ichkah'kekchellselsa could feel the eyes of everyone he passed in the hallways. They were all staring at him. Or was he just being paranoid? He wasn’t really sure. It was a bit odd not having Gale there jabbering on and on about things that didn’t matter. Now he was all quiet. Had he maybe gone somewhere?
Rounding a corner Ichkah'kekchellselsa shook his head and almost walked into someone. They both bowed to each other and then Ichkah'kekchellselsa continued on. He didn’t like the glances he was getting. He almost disliked it as much as Gale’s chatter.
Ichkah'kekchellselsa would’ve known if Gale had left his body. He would feel the tug like he always did when Gale left. He didn’t now though. So Gale was still there. Ichkah'kekchellselsa would’ve closed his eyes and taken some calming breaths to try and figure out what was up with Gale. If he had been at all interested, which he wasn’t.
Ichkah'kekchellselsa stopped in front of an arched doorway and an involuntary shiver went down his spine. They would both, very soon, know what the Elders wanted. "Ah, there you are Ichkah'kekchellselsa. They are waiting for you inside."
Glancing to his left Ichkah'kekchellselsa noticed the attendant. They both nodded to each other and then Ichkah'kekchellselsa stepped into the summoning room.
It looked exactly like it had all those days ago when he had been brought before them. Then it had been because of Ichkah’Lopigouhikgav’s death and he had pretty much known what was coming. Now he had no idea. So this was what fear felt like. He had read about it a lot and only vaguely felt something similar before. He didn’t particularly like the feeling but it wasn’t that bad. He had felt worse feelings.
Somebody coughed and Ichkah'kekchellselsa looked up from the white and very worn marble floor. The old men stood out from the white of the marble walls. It almost hurt his eyes.
Blinking he turned his head and bowed before the Elders. The silence stretched and something was growing in his stomach. Nerves, waiting had never bothered him before. Well, not like this. It must be Gale. Gale’s nervousness was spreading to him. But why would a demon be nervous? Had his research been right all along. Ichkah'kekchellselsa took a deep breath. "You called for me and I’ve answered your request."
Somebody coughed again but none answered. The ball of nerves in Ichkah'kekchellselsa stomach grew and grew until finally Elder Kerkel’Gavgekgunh spoke. "After the assembly this morning the village have spoken and we have decided to send you out to complete a request that has been made of us."
Ichkah'kekchellselsa looked up and saw one of the other Elder’s becon one of the attendants standing at attention next to the other entrance. The one across from where Ichkah'kekchellselsa had entered. The ball of nerves wasn’t growing anymore. It had only stopped growing. It didn’t seem to want to disappear at all. What was the request? Who had made the request and what was really going on?
A strange sound nearly startled Ichkah'kekchellselsa until he realized that it was metal against marble. A person in white steel armor stepped into the room and it took Ichkah'kekchellselsa a moment to realize that a taller and pale woman-of-the-sun stepped in after the-person-in-armor. Ichkah'kekchellselsa had to stop himself from sneering. What was she doing this far down in the "boondocks"?
Shaking his head at himself he looked over at the Elders. Kerkel’Gavgekgunh cleared his throat and nodded towards the person-in-armor.
Ichkah'kekchellselsa looked back at the person and looked on in fascination as the person-in-armor removed his helmet and Ichkah'kekchellselsa stared at the odd creature under the helmet. It had short stubby ears, small wisps of hair growing around it’s chin and mouth. As well as very pinkish skin. The red curly hair was sweaty and sticking to the sides of it’s face. Big brown yellow eyes were looking back at him.
Ichkah'kekchellselsa had never seen a human before but he had read about them. They were a strange lot. They were weak but growing steadily in numbers. Like piles of dust. Hard to get rid of when they had finally settled down.

Gil glanced over at Cal who couldn’t see him looking at her. Cal was conversing with one of the dark elves outside the big room that they had been brought to. They would finally get to meet their designated guide. He had been waiting to get out of this village for almost 3 days. THREE days. He had only asked for where they thought it was likely that kidnappers where hiding in the area and for someone to show them that place. Then they had been asked to wait and this was the third day.
What if she had been killed already? Gill shook his head and he would’ve slapped his own cheeks if he hadn’t been wearing his helmet. He couldn’t think like that. She was alive. If they had been hired to kill her they would’ve done so when they killed almost all of her entourage. They hadn’t so they must’ve just been kidnappers. He wanted to scratch the back of his neck but he couldn’t do that right now. Gil heard the dark elf guard mention his name. Gilbert Engel, but it sounded more like one word. Gilbert’Engel. It slightly miffed him when they did that. He had told them to call him Gil. His full name bothered him. "Ah, Gil, they are expecting us to step into the hall now."
Grunting Gil marched into the room, he could feel Cal following after him. He couldn’t hear her. He never did and that had always slightly unnerved him. Especially when she used it to pounce on him.
Stopping in front of the group of old dark elves Gil noted that there was a new face there. A younger one and he wasn’t looking at all happy. Gil pouted, it seemed like they all just wanted to avoid him and he had been really excited to visit. It probably wasn’t that strange though. The dark elves had been at war with the high elves for centuries when the humans started to butt in and take the side of the high elves. They had a peace treaty now but it probably didn’t help that he had brought a high elf with him, however what else could he do? Cal was his friend and partner and she could speak some of their language. Gil only knew a couple of phrases.
Unclipping and pulling his helmet off his head he glanced at the younger dark elf. His dark purple skin indeed looked like it sparkled. The skin of the old cots had lost that quality. Most of the dark elves that he had seen had been more on the blue side though. He had seen a couple of dark crimson elves but they had been few and far between. Not that he had actually had the privilege of seeing many dark elves while he had been here. For three days. They had mostly been cooped up in the rooms they had been given but he had seen some when they had ventured into this swamp, before they found this village. He had also seen a lot of them in books. The university he had attended had lots of books about them. Mostly written by high elves though.
The young dark elf looked back down and the floor and Gil realized that he had been outright staring the guy down. Gil’s face flushed and putting his helmet under one arm he scratched the back of his neck with his free hand. Glancing over at Cal he nodded towards the old guys that seemed to be in charge.
Cal took a step forward, positioning her next to Gil, then she bowed towards the old men. Gil bow his head slightly. "Will you aid us? Will you help us find the kidnapped princess?"
