Peaceful farmer Benjamin Martin is driven to lead the Colonial Militia during the American Revolution when a sadistic British officer murders his son.
Benjamin Martin is a South Carolina planter who is still haunted by his notoriously brutal past as a soldier in the French and Indian War. When the American Revolution comes, he chooses not to fight for the Continental Army because he wants to protect his family. But when the British Colonel Tavington threatens their welfare and kills one of his sons, he chooses to enlist. Martin becomes the leader of a makeshift militia, which consists of peasants, slaves, a minister, and assorted other irregulars. During the war Martin and his men discover that they will pay a steep personal price for their rebellion. But thanks to their courage and bravery, they are also destined to pay a pivotal role in turning the tide against the Redcoats.
This movie has its good and bad points. What is good: 1. It focuses on the war in the Southern colonies. This is a unique approach to what is commonly known about the Revolutionary War. 2. Mel Gibson's character is abruptly brought into the war. The events that force him into the war are compelling. The viewers get to explore the emotional and psychological nature of Mel Gibson's Character. 3. The guerilla war. This is very interesting because the movie takes the viewer from the very beginning of a guerilla band through the end of the war. 4. Tom Wilkinson. He is a joy to watch. He's kind of like the Sir Laurence Olivier of our day. Tom plays General Cornwallis, a decent man with good military skills who is confronted with moral dilemmas as he fights the war in the South. 5. Clean sexuality. For people tired of seeing teenagers and 20 somethings endlessly talk about sex, engage in sex, or being addicted to pornography and extremely foul language, this movie is refreshingly clean. The young people in this movie wait till after the wedding ceremony to engage in the sexual acts and they don't talk about it.
Here are the minuses:
1. The British as villians. This movie is trying to portray the as the bad guys to the endth degree. This is not WWII and there aren't any Nazi,SS, or SA troops in the Revolutionary war! The British were actually fairly humane and reasonable throughout the war, for the most part. 2. The battle of Cowpens. This movie tries to make the battle of Cowpens into a big hollywood style blockbuster action sequence. 3. The movie is too long. Maybe some scenes could have been cut out.
All in all, I liked this movie. It's an enjoyable way to learn some history. Mel Gibson is always a good draw.
There's really nothing fundamentally "wrong" with the movie. It's got an incredible soundtrack, is filmed well, and the acting is strong. But unfortunately, it's not realistic at all. The state militia never were able to single-handedly turn around the Revolutionary War; Cornwallis' would never make blunders that the movie seemed to emphasize; and... quite frankly, there never was a Mel Gibson playing the role of Benjamin Martin. Each man for his own, sure, but to see the outcome of the war in three hours? A little unusual for a war. To see everyone try to avenge someone else's death? Not quite. Other than the historical inaccuracies, the movie itself is fine. It's an uplifting movie... makes for fun watching.
The best movie I've seen about the Revolutionary War.
For three reasons: (1) The officers would be more experienced in defending the column that was escorting Gabriel to prison. They'd be better able than those lower in rank to fight off an attack by a single man and two boys. Additionally, officer training is more intense and involved than basic training, and they would be more knowledgeable in combat tactics. (2) With the officers dead, the other Redcoats in the column would find it harder to organize themselves into a single and effective fighting unit to repel the attack, as we plainly saw happen. So, without the officers yelling orders to the lower ranking soldiers, it was easier for Martin to mount his attack successfully. (3) Targeting officers specifically was not a standard military tactic at the time. It was not part of the gentlemanly code of warfare and would cause upset and confusion when the Rebels used this tactic. Yes and no. We're probably suspending some of our disbelief for the sake of the story—the scene is an excellent opportunity to introduce us to Martin as a great guerrilla warrior. Also, he had the advantage of his two sons already being excellent marksmen, having taught them that specific skill. With their elevated position on the nearby ridge, they had a huge advantage. Additionally, Martin had extensive knowledge of the area near his farm and the terrain therein. He chose the spot specifically for its cover by the natural flora (trees, shrubs, etc) and the ridge where he planted his sons to act as his snipers. This is a technique employed by marksmen, especially with less accurate weapons such as the muskets and other muzzle loaded weapons that were used during the American Revolution. What it means is the smaller the target you aim at, the smaller the chance of missing the larger target. For example, if the boys were to aim at an officer, they could miss him. But if they aim at a button on the officer's coat, they may miss the button, but they'd still hit the officer. As suspected by many people, the "new" Extended Cut features mostly scenes that were first used as deleted scenes for the old DVD release. Now these passages were re-integrated into the movie, adding up nearly 11 minutes to the movie. No. As with most films of the genre, it is fiction based on/inspired by true events. a5c7b9f00b
