I only meant to watch the first ten minutes, I ended up watching the lot.
Not too much dialogue, and what there is is mostly in Thai. So what?
If this film teaches one thing it's to stay clear of Heroin, especially in Thailand. Also (and I don't mind telling you this), I wouldn't last five minutes in a Bangkok jailhouse.
Be safe, kids. Keep it legal.
If you enjoy watching indie films, this is up your alley. If you prefer CGI and crazy special effects, then you'll be disappointed. This film doesn't have very much dialogue and Like most cases, the book is better. It takes a small portion of his life in prison and provides little backstory of the character. Some of the content isn't accurate, but that's to be expected. The film follows Billy's struggle with substance abuse, physical and prison struggle, and much like everything else in life, he has to fight his way for survival. Billy learns to adapt to a foreign country and it's prison system and a language barrier. For an independent film, this holds up. The cinematography is on point for this setting. I left with wanting more and that's difficult to do since the movie is already 2 hours long.
Director Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire (Johnny Mad Dog) makes some audacious, impressionistic choices, focusing on the nexus of sensual and brutal, but this is the rare true story that really could have used some creative embellishment.
