Five teams to leave Elitserien?
Swedish ice hockey changing.
Five teams of Swedish top league Elitserien, Färjestad, HV 71, Linköping, Frölunda and Djurgården, leaves Hockeyligan, the organisation of the Elitserien teams. The 2009/10 season will be played as announced but then it is unclear what will happen.
The teams may form a new league with teams from other countries or perhaps join KHL.
The reason that the five teams leaves Hockeyligan is that they can’t agree with the remaining 7 teams about the TV rights.
If the five teams decide not to play in Elitserien 2009/10, five new teams will be promoted from Allsvenskan to Elitserien according to Hockeyligan.
The five teams are also known as the NT-teams. NT stands for Nordic Trophy, a pre-season tournament that has been played with 5 teams of Finnish SM-Liiga. For next season Malmö (from Allsvenskan) and Lukko (SM-Liiga) will also participate in Nordic Trophy.
