Salvaged from a terrorist attack, orphan Mira Killian is a one-of-a-kind specimen of what begins to be the norm in the not-so-distant future: a cybernetically augmented human whose mind and soul resides in an immaculate synthetic body. As a result, hybrid Mira, now a resolute counter-cyberterrorism Major manufactured by the government-funded Hanka Robotics, is Sector 9's tip of the spear, nevertheless, when peculiar hallucinations interpreted as minor glitches will begin to bombard Major's fragmented mind, suspicions will arise. Could those short and spontaneous outbursts be dormant, yet immortal memories of a suppressed past?
In the near future, Major is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals.
Every otaku knows the meaning of the words: "Ghost in the Shell" and for those who aren't an otaku I can sum it one single word: masterpiece. And is on that masterpiece that this movie is based.
All in all, this is a well made movie. We were a bit skeptic when it was announced that they were going to make this movie but after watching the first trailer it seemed that this was going to be a good movie, and indeed it is a terrific movie. The movie pays a good homage to the original manga. you feel its spirit all the time: in the characters, in the plot, in the music and above all in the visuals.
What they have done in this movie is pretty simple: they have taken the best parts of the manga and anime, they put them in a cocktail shaker and this movie came out. So one that has no idea about the original story will simply be amazed of the story and all the action scenes that are shown in the movie, which they don't slow down for a moment. For us fans we are simply enjoying what we watched many time ago but now we enjoy watching it with real actors.
No need to say that Scarlett Black Widow fits in this characters perfectly. We are used to watch her in these kind of movies and she is fantastic. Not only that, she behaves like the cyborg/machine that she is, something that she kind of already did in the movie "Under the Skin". The rest of the characters are well suited both in performance and in physical aspect.
It's not easy adapting a manga into a single movie and it's less easy making a good movie about it. Here that is not the case as you will find a great entertaining movie that will leave you breathless in terms of visual effects and in terms of actions scenes, which are an exact copy of the original story. For those who haven't had the opportunity to read it, you will enjoy a good cyberpunk movie with loads of futurist takes and gadgets that you will definitely love.
I you like SF, if you like colors, 3D, opulent pictures, if you liked The Matrix, and you are no hard core Manga fan, but just a normal movie and action fan, than see this movie: you will love it and feel highly entertained. I am sure that you might feel disappointed if you have seen the anime movies, but if you have not, just go and see it.
Ghost in the Shall is a technical knockout, a here-and-now valentine to what design wizardry Hollywood can pull off in 2017. At the same time, it does so in service of a tired tale full of repurposed visual tricks, storytelling clichés and big-studio concessions.
Several details and approach differ from the original anime. The Ghost in the Shell franchise is based off of a manga (comic), and so the films and series and even video games have all taken creative license from the original source material.
Making a live action film made certain styles and approaches to the physical rendering of the world impractical resulting in many visual differences to the new film that imbue an 80's cyberpunk feel similar to that of Blade Runner.
Another difference is that the storyline is a blend of several of the existing series, and does not follow the same storyline as the original film. Characters and back story are predominantly drawn from Stand Alone Complex 2nd gig, Stand Alone Complex, Arise and the original film.
The degree of violence and swearing in the original film is on a completely different level from the live action film. Creative camera angles obscure the genitals of the characters, and very little swearing is present in the new film.
There is no question that this is a Ghost in the Shell story, but in many ways the philosophy is simplified and the pace is much faster than the original anime. In the Ghost in the Shell stories, the Major has a completely prosthetic body. Although written and published in Japan, the original comic and some of the series show the Major in several bodies, and at times without a body entirely. It is believed by many that the artist's rendering of her prosthetic body was deliberately ambiguous in its ethnicity, while her "ghost" (the spirit that makes up her character) is also of obscure origin. It is assumed that as the stories largely circulate in the region of Japan and east asia, that her original form was likely Japanese, though the Major speculates at times that she may be synthetic all-together; this is all a part of the philosophy discussed in the stories.
