With the Earth running short of natural energy resources the Jupiter mission to colonize and exploit Alpha Prime seems to be the only chance of survival. Professor John Robinson ('William Hurt' ) together with his wife Maureen, his family and fighter pilot Don West (lead a desperate attempt to create a Hyper-Gate in orbit around the planet Alpha Prime to enable the rescue of Earth to begin. However, others have different reasons for reaching Alpha Prime and Dr. Smith sabotages the Jupiter 2 but fails to get clear and becomes an unwelcome stowaway aboard the ship. To escape the gravitational pull of the sun the Hyper-Drive is fired and the Jupiter 2, after a trip through hyperspace, emerges into a completely unknown part of the galaxy. A search of the star charts reveals that they are completely lost in an uncharted sector of space but this is only the beginning of their problems...
In the year 2058, the Earth will soon be uninhabitable after the irreversible effects of pollution and global warming! Professor John Robinson, lead scientist of the Jupiter 2 Mission, will lead his family to the habitable planet Alpha Prime to prep it for colonization. The Jupiter 2 is equipped with a hyperdrive that allows faster-than-light travel, which will eventually be employed to evacuate the citizens of Earth. However hypergates must be constructed on Earth and Alpha Prime to provide stable points of departure and arrival. Dr. Zachary Smith is bribed by a terrorist organization to sabotage the mission, and ends up an unwilling stowaway as the ship blasts off.
This film was a sore disappointment. The acting was a wooden as a plank (no surprise from Matt Le Blanc, but Gary Oldman?). William Hurt was totally unbelievable as the Prof. He is not a actor whom it is easy to like, and he was particularly cold in this film.
The script was risible and jammed full of cliches. Unless I missed the tongue in cheek it took itself far too seriously. The effects were very good however although the crash scene was copied directly from Star Trek Generations.
What was the point of the monkey?
As an earlier reviewer said it has been left open for sequel(s). I just hope that they get someone to write a script next time, and ditch William Hurt.
Lost in Space was one my favorite series together with Land of the Giants and The Time Tunnel,in this movie unfortunately they got disgrace everything built in the original series as follow:
1-That Fuc*** monkey is totally bizarre and needless.
2-Dr. Smith was never evil mind,just con and coward.
3-Penny never was so shallow...writing diary where??
4-Too many unnecessary FX.
5-the new Robot is a scary monster!!!
6-The soundtrack apart LIS theme the remains is a crap!!
7-Dr. Smith became a Spider is TOOO MMMUUUCCH!!!
8-Bill Mumy could be an older Will...another fail!!
9-Jonathan Harris still lives in 1997...Big mistake!!
For the memories of Irwin Allen,Guy Williams and Jonathan Harris whose already passed away and cameo appearances of Mark Goddard,Angela Cartwright,June Lockhart and Marta Kristen l'll give 6 out 10 just for them!!

Though there's an obvious, admirable effort to supply character development and plot twists, the set-work and special effects - both stylish and stunning - tend to dominate.
SImple answer - it's not Matt Le Blanc under the helmet. Because the actor was also busy filming the TV series "Friends" at the same time as making this movie, a double was used for this sequence to allow for some flexibility in the actor's schedule.
Also, because he's a military officer, his helmet is more advanced and protective than the ones used by the Robinsons. a5c7b9f00b
