27 Feb 2014 No approach portal is 100% accurate, and the accuracy of injection of the knee joint may be enhanced by the use of techniques such as ultrasound. . and Sibbitt et al.31) reported that ultrasound-guided aspiration and injection of the knee resulted in improved aspiration success, greater synovial fluid yield
13 Aug 2015 Classically, the physical exam findings for a knee effusion are swelling, a decreased range of motion, and a ballotable, or floating, patella. Ultrasound has been shown to be effective in identification of knee effusion as well as allow for real-time visualized technique for joint aspiration.
In this case, the anteroinferior aspect of the trochlear articular surface is targeted; needle positioning starts just medial or lateral to the patellar tendon. Mild cephalic angulation may be used but is not necessary. Joint injection (or aspiration) of the knee can also be performed easily with ultrasound.
These procedures may be performed under fluoroscopic, ultrasound, computed tomography, or even magnetic resonance guidance depending on the location to be accessed, type of pathology, . At our institution, the hip represents the joint for which image-guided synovial fluid aspiration is most commonly requested.
For those who perform aspiration, familiarity with imaging-guided arthrocentesis techniques also is important. Septic arthritis is produced by a microbial invasion of the synovial space. Virtually every infectious agent has caused septic arthritis. Bacteria, however, are the most common and important cause of joint infection

ABSTRACT : OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this article is to review some of the most common reasons for ultrasound intervention around the hip joint, and describe the techniques involved. CONCLUSION. Ultrasound alleviates the need for exposure to radiation and is already the modality of choice for aspiration of the hip
Although a previous study suggested that ultrasound guidance could improve the accuracy of joint injections [7], to date, there have been no published studies using ultrasound guidance to assess various approaches for knee joint injection and aspiration and to identify the optimal approach.
