Alton Meyer is a boy unlike any other in the world with bizarrely powerful abilities and strange weaknesses. In the middle of the night, his father, Roy, spirits him away from the isolated cult that practically worships him and is determined to regain him at all costs. At the same time, Alton's abilities have been noticed by the US government as well and they are equally insistent on getting to the bottom of this mystery with Paul Sevier of the National Security Agency leading the Federal pursuit with his own questions. These rival hunts force father and son into a desperate run towards a looming date with destiny that could change everything.
A father and son go on the run, pursued by the government and a cult drawn to the child's special powers.
Despite being handled by a major Hollywood studio, "Midnight Special" didn't get much of a theatrical release, and upon watching it it's easy to figure out why. One big reason is that there is not much action or thrills of any sort, but those facts personally didn't bother me - I appreciate now and then a movie that tries to be more quiet and thoughtful. I also appreciated that the movie did not try and spoon feed its audience an immediate explanation as to what was going on; you have to figure it out as it goes along. But that's where the main problem of the movie comes up. Although you do get eventually a reasonable idea of what's going on, there are a lot of plot details in the end that are simply not clear at all. As a result, the movie eventually gets to be quite frustrating, especially with the head-scratching stuff that happens in the final few minutes. Too bad, because the movie looks nice for what wasn't a megabudget, it's acceptably acted, and there are some good ideas displayed on occasion (though these ideas are for the most part not developed enough.) Overall, nothing terribly special here.
I have been a fan of Jeff Nichols' work no doubt. He's able to create really well-done, satisfying indie films with a lot of naturalism. I would first start off by saying that Midnight Special may be a really good film, but I also think there could have been potential for it to be a really great one. As it stands, the screenplay does have a few cracks in it that prevent me from going even further in my praise for it. The acting is uniformly good. It's always great to see Kirsten Dunst, and she does the most that she can with such a quiet, introspective role. The same goes for Michael Shannon and Joel Edgerton really. The cinematography was, at times, a bit too dark. Intentional or not, still not that satisfying. Overall, this is an ambitious sci-fi flick that isn't reliant on twists, turns, or action and for that it is very recommended.
Nichols has a light touch when it comes to genre, which is Midnight Special's great blessing and curse.
