The Taelon race, originally regarded with a mix of hostility and awkward acceptance by the humans, have started to reveal through accidents and espionage work, their eventual reasons and plans for the human race. They are at war with a species called the Jaridians, whom they are related to. However, as Zo'or, head of the senate prepares humanity to be the foot soldiers in a war to enslave the Jaridians, Da'an, the only Taelon to side with humanity, assists a small group of freedom fighters attempting to decide where humanity should fit into this battle.
An androgynous alien species called the Taelons arrive on earth, claiming to be companions of humanity, putting an end to crime, illness, and famine. Some are suspicious of the Taleons, and form a resistance movement. The resistance soon learned that the force that sustains the Taelons are breaking down, and they are using humans as test subjects in experiments to help save their species. The initial focus of the show was Commander William Boone and his partner, Captain Lili Marquette, who worked for both the Taelons and the resistance. After Boone was killed, the show introduced a new protagonist, Major Liam Kincaid, and began to play on the strengths of its ensemble cast.
'Wachenroeder ' speaks truly when he praises the first episode of this sci-fi series. Many other sci-fi aficionados have made much the same observation. All who know and appreciate a good story well-told also agree that all episodes after the first series ended are complete and utter rubbish.
After the tragic death of the creator, the great Gene Roddenberry, the producers seem to have completely lost faith in the project. It was always going to be one of those slow-burn successes, because it was so very different. But it was a high-concept, stylish adventure that was full of wonderful ideas that could have sustained any half-decent writers for many series without any lapse of interest. They just had to keep faith with Roddenberry's intriguing ideas and follow the cues he had already established in the early episodes.
I really do consider this might have been second only to the genius re-boot of 'Battlestar Galactica' had it been allowed to develop. Then it would have merited 9 or 10. But as it turned out it is only worth a grudging 1.
It was killed after Series 1, without even any pretence of plot or character logic, and some sort of Frankenstein's monster was cobbled together out of the mangled corpse, that bore no relationship whatever to the original - or even to anything resembling a coherent and well-written drama.
There are - I regret to say - some Americans here who seem to think the other way around: that the first series needed drastic action to make it appealing to the US market. More violence, more monsters, no boring character- building and lots more shooting and explosions. Definitely no confusing alien invaders some of whom you were actually supposed to like and admire, and get rid of all that boring grown-up diplomatic activity when you're supposed to have heroes who only KILL all aliens all the time - in every episode!
Don't listen to these children. For any adult with half a brain, distaste and boredom are the only possible reaction to what followed the superb first series of Roddenberry's sadly abortive last sci-fi series.
If I had to give two reasons why this show failed I think I'd go with: low budget and bad writers. Unfortunately the scripts are dire, the dialogue is difficult to watch and the science is more than a little sketchy. Each episode tries to play like the x-files but it just doesn't work. They'll introduce one new character and then flood you with endless reams of dialogue with this character that you know is going to vanish in the next episode. At the end of the episode you will come away with one tiny additional fact about the main characters and be left thinking '45 minutes for that'. EFC might have been better as a trilogy of movies as the information revealed during one season could be encapsulated in 90 minutes of video. For its time the scifi was up to scratch and combined with the androgeny of the alien species you are dragged through season one by sheer fascination. However, the novelty fails when nothing changes in season two and the sci-fi budget appears to drop like a bomb. Could have been a very good show - I cant really go into much detail about the isolation of the plot but you'll get the jist in a few episodes.
