A team of teenagers with attitude are recruited to save Angel Grove from the evil witch, Rita Repulsa, and later, Lord Zedd, Emperor of all he sees, and their horde of monsters.
Four athletically able teenagers along with their brainy friend Billy are selected by Zordon to fight the evil of Rita Repulsa, her monsters and her minions after the witch is accidentally released from imprisonment in an intergalactic dumpster on the moon. Later in the series, the rangers are joined by Tommy, the once evil Green Ranger designed for Rita's evil, but later was deprogrammed and spent two portions of the series briefly as the Green Ranger. Over time, some rangers had to pass their powers to others as well. Action scenes and scenes with Rita were edited from footage based on Japanese action sagas. Replacement villain Lord Zedd was designed in the U.S.
This show is easy to bag, think about it, huge dinosaurs that look like giant action figures, spandex-clad heroes in crazy looking helmets. And boy has it been bagged.
Unfairly bagged? Yes and no. The stories are corny, MOST of the time. However, if you persevere, sooner or later you will get a great story, usually in the two or more part episodes.
I find the show to be enjoyable to watch, when the story is not corny, especially when the major plotlines are being furthered. Some episodes seem to have been made, just to fill out a season.
Look past the crazy costumes/monsters, and get involved in the story, which can get quite good.
I used to watch this show as a kid and as I grew up (I'm 18 years old) I still love it for it's cheesy, but nostalgic value that captivated me from the past few years along with all of the new seasons, although some of them weren't nearly as excellent as that show. The characters, the main five power rangers, were great and likable thanks to the acting, the morphing sequences, although cheesy, were decent, the action between the rangers and the monsters they have to face were enjoyable to watch especially the megazord fight sequences. The main villains are also pretty good too. Rita, although annoying, was OK, but Lord Zedd is very interesting with his menacing presence and the sidekicks were hilarious for the show's comic relief moments.
The reason why I'm giving this a 9/10 is because the third season's episodes were quite weak, but not completely unwatchable while the first two seasons were creative and interesting with lots of great character-development between the main characters. Overall, not excellent, but I've seen much worse TV shows. This show will always be watchable for children and PR fans will never forget this nostalgia classic.
