Strange events are occurring in New York City, and the Turtles are needed more than ever, but Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo have become lost and directionless. With the city at stake, it's up to Leonardo and Zen Master Splinter to restore unity and ninja discipline to the Turtles.
After the defeat of their old arch nemesis, The Shredder, the Turtles have grown apart as a family. Struggling to keep them together, their sensei, Master Splinter, becomes worried when strange things brewing in New York City. Tech-industrialist tycoon Max Winters revives four ancient stone warriors and enlists the help of the foot clan to help capture ancient monsters.
After the first two films performed reasonably well at the box office but the third film basically bombed, it was clear that the turtles were in desperate need of a revival. After fourteen years of silence, the turtles are back, and they look better than ever! But with all of the new movies this weekend, is seeing the turtles on the big screen again really worth your time or money? TMNT is directed and written by Kevin Munroe, and it features an all-star voice cast that is one of the movie's strongest points; Sarah Michelle Gellar of TV's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", Chris Evans of Cellular and Fantastic Four, Kevin Smith of Clerks II and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Mako of Memoirs of a Geisha and Ziyi Zhang of Memoirs of a Geisha are all frequent characters in the film.
After the defeat of their old arch nemesis, Shredder, the Turtles have grown apart as a family. Struggling to keep them together, their sensei, Master Splinter (Mako) becomes worried when strange things begin to brew in New York City. Tech-industrialist Max Winters goes mad after he was wrongfully fired, and begins amassing an army of ancient monsters. Realizing his plan is succeeding, he is no longer satisfied with vengeance against his ex-employer but now has thirst for world domination. The turtles must team up with Casey (Evans), April (Gellar), and Karai (Zhang) and the Foot Ninjas in order to bring down Winters and his army of monsters, but in order to defeat their foes, they must come back together as a family and learn how to work as a team once more.
So after fourteen years, was TMNT really worth the wait? Well, yes and no. The transfer from live action to full CGI is actually beautiful and achieved with little ease. This is how the turtles and the world of the turtles should always look. Everything from action sequences to tall buildings to small blades of grass looks absolutely stunning. The visuals and story are much closer to the comic books, which equated in a major plus in every category. We also get an all-new plot; and a somewhat dark, mature plot at that. There are times when the movie gets a little serious, and those are its strongest points. Which brings me to one of TMNT's major problems: it tries too hard, and it seems unsure of what type of movie it wants to be. Hysterically funny CGI flick or dark fantasy? Mindless action movie or fun character drama? TMNT seems to be all over the place in many areas, as if the fourteen years weren't enough to make a good movie. Another big flaw is that there never really seems to be a sense of dread or any edge-of-your-seat action sequences. You know that the turtles will prevail because nothing ever holds them back. There is one scene where the turtles are faced with an army of thousands of Foot Ninjas; none of the turtles gets so much as a scratch on him. There are no kidnappings that aren't preventable, very little tension between characters, and there are very few scenes that aren't hopelessly predictable. You already know the ending to this movie before you even seen it. On the plus side, the inner turmoil between Leonardo and Raphael is intriguing and interesting while it lasts.
As previously stated, the voice acting is best part about this movie, along with the plot. Chris Evans and Sarah Michelle Gellar sound perfect as the two leads, and everyone else puts in enough savvy to keep things going strong. Casey and April are basically revived and different from the original, and both of the characters have sort of a modern edge. Mako is perfectly cast as Splinter, and he fills the role with loads of gusto. The normal wit and dark humor that we've come to expect from the Turtles films is mostly absent here, as there are few scenes that generate so much as a chuckle. When the hilarious scenes do happen, however, they are pure magic. The length was also a distraction, as this movie only runs a mere 87 minutes. They tried to cram too many things into a short runtime when all they had to do was add in more comedy, suspense, and more of an overall mood. Because of the length, some of the characters are given very little screen time. April, Michelangelo, and Donatello are very minor characters here when usually all three are pivotal in any installment of the turtles. The team dynamic between the pizza-loving turtles is just as good here as it has always been, but you can really tell that the events which unfolded in this installment were only meant to be the beginning in a full-scale revival. There are many hints to the next movie littered throughout this one in various fashions, and hopefully the next movie will be better than this one.
Keep in mind that this is not a horrible movie under any circumstances. If you're looking for horrible movies, look no further than Wild Hogs. However, as an avid fan of all things Turtles, after waiting fourteen years for a dark, solid, fantastic follow-up that would revive the series, I can't help but be extremely disappointed. Kids will certainly enjoy this movie, but adults will be left craving more Turtles, and hopefully there is more soon to come that will utilize such a great plot as this installment and feature such sensational voice acting. There is certainly loads of potential here, and perhaps the next installment will utilize more of everything to make a perfect movie.
Now this Ninja Turtles movie is pretty fair. The only flaw that I've seen in this movie was that technically the Turtles didn't fight any villains at all. They just helped an ancient warrior become mortal again. Also I did think that Patrick Stewart did fine with voicing this character who I thought was a villain at first, until I saw that he just wanted to be mortal again which is kind of stupid, but still this movie isn't too bad. Also this movie is kind of better then Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 Turtles in Time. Also I didn't notice at first until now that Chris Evans aka Captain America voiced Kasey Jones in this. I also have never watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer but did notice that she voiced April O Neil in this. Yeah the whole plot in this film is kind of dull, but still it has some pretty good action in it. This movie would've been a whole lot more awesome if Kraang was in it. Still this film is fair so I'm giving this film 7 out of 10.
This all-CG reboot is missing the goofy excitement of the old TMNT.
