29 Sep 2017 Make sure that the circuit is dead before continuing or touching any bare wire. There are four wires that are terminated (fastened to) a 4 way switch, plus the green or bare ground wire. In nearly every case these wires will enter the wall box in 2 separate cables.
(a Single Light) Before going any further with the 4-way switch instructions, I would recommend you go to my Wiring a 3-way switch page and first become familiar with that circuit and how it functions. OK, assuming you are all caught up on the 3-way concept, we will continue by making a 3-way circuit into a 4-way circuit.
Connect the hot source to the common terminal on the first 3-way and the hot wire from the lights to the common terminal on the second 3-way. Place each 4-way switch, one after another, between the 3-ways. Connect all traveler terminals between the switches and the circuit will work as planned.
