In Paris, a young employee in the office of the US Ambassador hooks up with an American spy looking to stop a terrorist attack in the city.
The assistant of the American Ambassador in Paris James Reece is an aspirant spy working in minor jobs for the CIA. James lives with his fiancée Caroline and expects to be promoted to the special operations. When James is assigned to drive the unconventional but efficient agent Charlie Wax in Paris, James learns that a terrorist cell is preparing to attack the American delegation and he is close to the key element that will explode the group of representatives of his government.
Part of me can't believe that I'm giving this movie an 8. Travolta is eating scenery. I wasn't quite sure what was going on at times. That mustache on Rhys Meyers is too goofy. Yet another part of me is wondering if I should even give it more than 8 as this movie was a great joy ride. Other than a few scenes to lay the groundwork (which are interesting on their own), this movie straps you in and like a wild roller coaster it's over before you had a chance to scream.
Yes, Travolta is eating scenery, but, like Mae West, when he's good, he's good; but when he's bad he's even better!?!? The track record that Luc Besson has built up in this genre (let's call it 'non-sensical non-stop action flick') with all of those Transporter movies is incredible. Unlike Michael Bay, who turns your attention away from the movie with all of the overkill and grandiosity, Besson keeps it short, simple and tight. A quick karate chop to the neck or a bullet to the head is worth nine explosions.
I'm not saying I'd give this a 10 after spending $30 on a night out with the Mrs, but for a few bucks for a fun family DVD night from your local DVD center, it's a blast.
Meet James. James is a young employee of the embassy and wants more from life and work. Meet Charlie. Charlie is a toughened agent that deals with trouble in his own peculiar way. When a specific need arises to team the two up all kinds of things start happening - the most of them with some collateral damage.
Based on the standard "good cop, bad cop" theme this film is one of many. It uses a simple backing storyline with some fair twisting and turning (although nowhere completely convincing and sometimes downright unbelievable), but most of the film is there for the action - the fireworks that are supposed to happen between the two different lead characters and the way they go through their characters lives.
Unfortunately for this film that last point is where things really fail - Travolta and Meyers do not combine all too well, there are no fireworks, there is almost no chemistry at all, the two of them turn and twist around each other and that's about it. There are some good moments to the film, but the very most of it is just "blah", another run of the mill film that is easily forgotten.

Basically a bloody buddy picture that tries too hard.
