Book descriptionTo be fair, I would probably never have picked this up or read anything by this guy had I not been given this set of Penguin English Journeys as a present. Some parts of this book interested me more than others. This book is a series of short chapters about the southern English farmland countryside, written in the late 1800s. This is the working countryside, so youve got to accept that people went hunting, killed rabbits etc so that they wouldnt eat all the grass intended for sheep etc. Im not really interested in all that, so the bit about his guns was, well, dull. Strangely enough, the chapter about ferreting was interesting - and I dont particularly like ferrets, killing things or any of that. Perhaps just because it was something I didnt really know about, and that it was well-written. Other chapters are more reflective, like hes sat somewhere just looking over the landscape and whats there and mulling over life.
