Ten years after a global economic collapse, a cold-blooded drifter traverses the scorched Australian outback on a mission to track down the men who stole his last remaining possession - his car. When he crosses paths with a badly wounded member of the gang, he takes the vulnerable, naïve young man along as his unwitting accomplice.
10 years after a global economic collapse, a hardened loner pursues the men who stole his only possession, his car. Along the way, he captures one of the thieves' brother, and the duo form an uneasy bond during the dangerous journey.
Given the post-collapse Outback setting, comparisons to MAD MAX are inevitable. But THE ROVER has more in common with THE PROPOSITION; it's a distinctly brooding affair, gritty and somewhat nihilistic. We aren't given a background for "the collapse", but society's definitely a shambles. And that loss of morals is embodied by on-the-raggedy-edge Guy Pearce, who appears shockingly gaunt and emotionally beaten. He's the reason why I sought out this movie, and the reason why anyone should; it's a seethingly intense performance. The movie doesn't offer any reason why Pearce is gunning for his stolen car until the very end - and though I do like the reason given, this is a very bleak movie. It'll be a while before I ever come back to this one.

The first thing you notice is how slow the open is. Eric (Guy Pearce) has the opening shot all to himself, in profile, and the audience is mesmerized as flies alight on his face and he does not even bother to brush them off. That sets the tone. Next, while the intent of the story is still far from clear, a gang of ruffians steals Eric's car for no other reason than their own got stuck in some hardware, and they could not get it free. After they leave, Eric is able to get THEIR car free and starts on a quest for vengeance, and to retrieve his car. That's the story. No kidding. That's the story.
The dialog is sparse. The "gimmick" that this takes place is some sort of post-apocalyptic Austrialia gives the writer the artistic freedom to unleash on the screen the most terrible horror ever catalogued in the history of our planet - human nature. The reviews missed that but this is neither a drama nor an action film. It is a horror film.
That BOTH Pearce and Pattison are so deep in their roles even their die-hard fans might not easily recognize them is a testament to the vision of the director and the conviction of the actors.
Amazing.
While there are some very strong performances in the film, the movie is inert, dramatically speaking, and covers such familiar ground that I can't really recommend it.
