It is the year 1215 and the rebel barons of England have forced their despised King John to put his royal seal to the Magna Carta, a noble, seminal document that upheld the rights of free-men. Yet within months of pledging himself to the great charter, the King reneged on his word and assembled a mercenary army on the south coast of England with the intention of bringing the barons and the country back under his tyrannical rule. Barring his way stood the mighty Rochester castle, a place that would become the symbol of the rebel's momentous struggle for justice and freedom.
King John Lackland reneges in 1215, the year the barons force him to sign to Magna Carta, on its parliamentary terms to resume his tyrannical misrule, and raised an army of pagan mercenaries to smash those barons who dare resist again. William d'Aubigny's warrior band, including knight Templar Thomas Marshal and his squire Guy, decides to make a stand in Rochester, a strategic castle to bar the road to London, so they force its lord, baron Reginald de Cornhill, to side with them after eliminating the Danish watchdogs. Captain Tiberius's mercenary band fails for months to make their numeric superiority count during a bloody siege, over which John presides personally, eager to take the castle before French and/or domestic rebel reinforcements may arrive. Baron Reginald's wife Isabel regrets their arranged marriage, enough to nearly-openly lust for handsome crusade veteran Thomas, who however takes his order vows seriously.
This could have been a great film. It has the epic historic story, the great cast and a rising star in James Purefoy... but it's all let down by that stupid 'technique' of the shaky-camera.
Yes this film has loads of bloodshed and violence, as it should be, but good luck in actually seeing most of it! I question why anyone would make a film with some horrifically violent scenes and then use shaky-cam for the rest? It's clearly not for censors...so what? It's LAZY film making ladies & gents.
If you get sea-sick you'd best stay clear. As for this piece of uninspired crap.... I hope it drowns.
This is an authentic little masterpiece which reminds me Paul Verhoeven's FLESH AND BLOOD and also, somewhere, Franklin Schaffner's WAR LORD, starring Charlton Heston. A medieval tale about a siege around a castle and its keep. A real fierce, brutal, bloody and sometimes disgusting yarn that sticks you to your seat. A hard boiled story not for the squeamish. But I don't understand what the hell does that f...broad do in the middle of such a story, such a wonderful movie. It's a man's story, not for female, not for the sissies...And because of that broad, the ending is such a mess, such a disaster.
I am ashamed of this for the screenwriter and the director too. Everything is spoiled with this f...ending for the sissies.
And such a pain for me.
If you don't see what I mean, only imagine a love story between Anne Bancroft and a man in Arthur Penn's masterpiece MIRACLE WORKER...It would have been as appropriate as an elephant standing in a City Hospital...
I hate love interests among manhood tales. There is no place for that.
Casting is almost uniformly first rate with Cox, Purefoy and the always brilliant Giamatti providing noteworthy standouts.
