In 1880, four men travel together to the city of Silverado. They come across many dangers before they finally engage the "bad guys" and bring peace and equality back to the city.
A misfit bunch of friends come together to right the injustices which exist in a small town.
Spoiler Warning. The fullscreen version of Silverado is a truly wonderful movie, but it suffers terribly from losing so much of the image. There are many shots (no pun intended) that require widescreen to see and understand the action. The single most important example is the climax of the film - Paden and the Sheriff's old-style fast-draw - wherein the audience cannot see the action until too late. It simply doesn't appear on screen. Many of Kevin Costner's best sequences also occur off-screen or mostly off-screen. Thankfully, there has been enough interest to result in a limited widescreen release on DVD in 1999, but it has been discontinued, and is now only available used from collectors. This comment is to encourage the many fans of this wonderful film to also seek out the widescreen version. Enough interest generated will achieve results, and there are certainly many of us who want to see the version we only remember from the theatrical release.
For whatever it's worth, I grew up on the backlot of Republic Studios. There were probably more Westerns made there than anywhere else. I knew John "Pappy" Ford and The Duke. In fact, I actually once sat on Trigger. I'd like to feel that I know something of the genre.
You really can't compare Silverado to "Red River", "High Noon" or "The Searchers". These films were driven by one character (John Wayne or Gary Cooper) and Silverado is an ensemble piece. Having said that, the pieces fit very nicely.
People who reject the work of the young Kevin Kostner or Kevin Kline probably don't know what fine actors they actually are. Scott Glenn gives one of the best performances of his career. Brian Dennehey, the guy you love to hate, Linda Hunt, who is totally believable. You can argue that the extirpating of the love interest harmed the film, but anybody who attempts to make a 2 1/2 hour Western these days, does so at his peril. Studios are unforgiving to those who don't squeeze everything into 120 pages.
The music - Bruce Broughton's best soundtrack ever. It's John Williams level quality. The camera work matches the best you'll see in any of the classics. And there are moments. Kevin Costner's two guns shoot out, Scott Glenn's killer horse trick, and of course the final showdown between good and evil. Kasdan brought all his magic to the film. He's a wonderful actor's director and the degree of difficult shooting in New Mexico across a freezing winter is high, but brings forth spectacular landscapes.
I'll never be without a copy of this film. The same goes for Red River, Stage Coach, High Noon and The Searchers. Is it as good as those classics. At some point good becomes a relative judgment call.
The people who made this movie did a terrific job. If you don't see it, you've missed a great ride!
This movie is more sophisticated and complicated than the Westerns of my childhood, and it is certainly better looking and better acted.
