In a near future, with China at war against the West, the UK government develops war machines to fight against them. Scientist Vincent works in a military base developing artificial intelligence for the Ministry of Defense, using soldiers near death in his experiments; however, his true intention is to find a cure to his daughter Mary that has Rett Syndrome. When Vincent meets scientist Ava who has developed an advanced AI, he invites her to work with him for the Defense Department; however, Ava's snoop around the base prompts Chief of Research Thomson into simulating a Chinese attempt to kill her. Vincent decides to use Ava's face and shape to build an indestructible AI Machine. Soon he discovers the Machine developing feelings and growing up as a human being. When Mary gets worse and has to be submitted to surgery, Vincent learns that the Machine has life and is in love with him, but Thomson wants to transform her in a killing machine for the military.
Set in the future and with the world plunged in economic crisis a new cold war with China, Britain's Ministry of Defence (MoD) is on the verge of developing the world's first artificially intelligent robotic soldier. The robot sounds and looks human but has amazing strength, speed, and agility. When the defense project gets close to completion, the AI controlled robot is pulled from the research and testing phase and thrust into military training mode. The child-like AI is traumatized by the transition, the way a pit bull puppy might be when brutalized for similar purposes. In a broad effort to preserve itself and those it has come to care about, the AI robot and a posse of cyborg veterans working within the MoD stage a lethal takeover of the research facility.
THE MACHINE is competently made, occasionally deep but slightly underwhelming sci-fi film. The story is about a government employee who works with robotics. His daughter is sick, and he hopes to find a cure for her through his work. Shortly after taking on a new assistant, Ava, she is killed and he puts her consciousness into a machine that has her likeness. One thing I did like about the movie was that it took its time with character development and raised those interesting questions that many other sci-films only flirt with: the question of whether AI can ever be considered "alive", what it means to be human, etc. Character motivations were also explored to a degree, which helped to flesh out the material despite the short running time. The only fault I can find with it is that there wasn't enough payoff in terms of action or suspense. The movie was definitely building up to something (which I won't spoil), but the way in which it was resolved was kind of messy and could have been handled in a better way. Still, I did enjoy it. The soundtrack is also worth mentioning. There were elements of it that reminded me of BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. Overall, this is more of a thinking person's sci-fi, which isn't bad, it's just not what I expected.
In this day in age when most movies suck terribly, it is a wonderful delight to finally see a movie that absolutely rocks. The makers of this movie really put some actual thought into this film. First off, the movie looks awesome. The set looks so real. You can totally believe this is a dark future with advanced technology. The special effects were great, they did not look fake. The story was intriguing. It brings up thought provoking ideas. What is life, how do we know we are alive? The way they pulled this off was excellent. The movie is surreal, the acting superb. You can't go wrong watching this. The actors do an excellent job. The guy who plays Vincent displays the appropriate emotions, the evil corporation is portrayed with class. You could feel the emotions from the movie. You were so rooting for the machines. The machines acted more human.
Brimming with ideas and laudable ambition, it's well worth a look.
