In New Orleans, the former smuggler Chris Faraday has regenerated and raised a family of his own with his wife Kate and their two children. Chris works in installation of alarms and his father is locked in prison for smuggling. When his brother-in-law Andy dumps in the sea water 10 pounds of cocaine that he is smuggling for the drug lord Tim Briggs to escape from the custom officers, Chris is forced to pay Andy's debts to protect the youngster and his own family. Chris leaves his wife and children under the protection of his best friend Sebastian Abney and travels in a Container Carrier to Panama to bring counterfeit bills and raise the money to pay Briggs. But Briggs and his partner want to force Chris to smuggle drugs and will use his family to reach their objective. Meanwhile Chris is betrayed and gets in trouble in Panama.
To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.
I love Mark Wahlberg and I love Kate Beckinsale. And so I am forced to ask myself: What the hell happened here?
Contraband is a typical "heist" movie, with a script taken from some 70's dust bin, only instead of robbing something, they are smuggling it. It starts with the too much used cliché of the good guy that got out of "the business", but is forced to do one more hit, it continues with some pretty unbelievable scenarios and it ends with a big fat flop.
Clearly we live in an era where everything has to be bright and big, but if you first set up a character as the Houdini of smuggling, then it makes no sense to have him put again and again in situations where only luck helps. Assuming Contraband was a video game, it would be impossible to finish just because there were so many places where the entire operation could have and did fail.
Then there is the entire Kate Beckinsale part. Loving wife, for no apparent reason, since her husband is placing here in the most disturbing and dangerous situations, inept victim and a pretty neurotic mother, she gets only a few scenes and then she's done. Is there a rule that if an actress is over 35 she must forever cast as a mom? Even in Underworld 4 they did that to her!
And finally, Giovanni Ribisi, a great actor when used correctly. They did not use him correctly. Nuff said.
Bottom line: implausible situations, average acting, bad script, implausible situations and the ending... completely anticlimactic. Not to mention the implausibility of it all. Sorry, Mark, this movie was just bad.
Another one of Mark Wahlbergs action films. Which is probably one of his better ones. The plot is interesting and has not been done 1000 times and the acting is good from the whole cast. This is actually one of the better action movies I have seen lately. The story line is very simple and straight forward but if your a fan of action movies this is right up your alley.
This movie is about an ex smuggler(Wahlberg) who has a brother in law that got mixed up with some drug dealers. In order to save his brother in laws life he must go to panama and smuggle back millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.
This movie is definitely worth a watch or two. It is very simple but the entertainment factor is there.
This solid if disposable genre exercise maintains a hard-driving line of action and a commitment to one-damned-thing-after-another storytelling that carries it past any number of narrative speedbumps and preposterous detours.
When Giovanni Ribisi first auditioned for Contraband, it was for a different part. The director, Kormákur, suggested he read for Tim Briggs, the local thug who terrorizes the Farraday family. Kormákur says he was originally looking for the tough guy, but he felt that Ribisi brought something unexpected and more dangerous than a typical bully would. 646f9e108c
