In the future, Earth becomes inhabitable and mankind moves to Nova Prime. However, aliens try to conquer Nova Prime but are defeated by the Rangers under the command of General Cypher Raige. The aliens bring the predator Ursas to hunt down the humans attracted by their fear and Raige develops the fearless ghosting technique to defeat them. On the same day that Raige returns home, his estranged son Kitai Raige is not advanced to the Ranger position in the academy. Raige promises his wife that he will travel in his last assignment before retirement and she convinces him to bring Kitai with him. When their spacecraft is damaged by an asteroid storm, she crashes on Earth and only Raige and Kitai survive. Raige breaks both legs and Kitai needs to cross the hostile and dangerous planet to retrieve the beacon and save their lives.
A crash landing leaves Kitai Raige and his father Cypher stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity's escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help.
After the movie "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening", I made a promise to myself to never ever spend another dime on a M. Night Shymalayan movies- So I wasn't surprised not in the least of pitiful reviews and disappointed responses by those who went to see this movie- People that are friends with with friends of ours all stated that theaters that were showing this movie were nearly empty, so word of mouth is spreading-
Six Senses was an awesome movie, beautifully acted, edited, directed and produced- I don't know what happened to M. Night Shymalayan's movie directing/producing skills after the block buster success "Six Senses", for he is now box office poison to me and make it a point to steer clear of his films-
With a story by Will Smith written into screenplay by Shyamalan, I thought this might be Shyamalan's return to greatness! Sadly, the plot is so full of holes that it beggars belief. Two people surviving a spaceship re-entry and crash is just the start of it.
Let's start with what there is to like about this movie. Smith's unique vision of humanity's future is revealed in the creative use of special effects. I loved the way the apartment rooms are set out and the construction of the spaceship is "different". The evolved creatures of a future earth were quite wonderful.
It seems that mediocrity is contagious, and spread from the director to the rest of the cast and crew. Maybe Shyamalan's heart really wasn't in this movie, because that's how it seemed. Will Smith's acting was stilted. It appeared as if his character learned to suppress his fear - along with all his other emotions too. He might as well have been a robot. So was his son.
I recommend you see this movie so it gives you a perspective on what's good and what isn't. I didn't feel this was bad enough to demand my money back - certainly not to the point where I wanted to walk out, or play Angry Birds on my cell phone until the ending. I keep seeing Shyamalan's movies because I'm sure his next one is going to be better. He's done three good ones - surely he's got one more winner left in him - maybe his next one?
Jaden is fine at running, jumping, fearful trembling, and affecting steely resolution. He doesn't yet have his father's charisma; perhaps to help him out, dad opted not to bring that charisma to the set.
