It could be fun at times.. The opening was absolutely spectacular. But geez did it go south..

I was surprised how poor the dialog was. Some of the acting wasn't good either. I am not sure the casting was as good as it should have been. One of the main characters absolutely failed..

Some of the characters just looked like people wearing a uniform and a mask. Surprising considering how well done some of the space sequences were made.

It was a fun(ish) time. I love movies and I extracted enough joy from this one to justify the trip to the theater.. But I won't be buying the bluray for sure..Good SciFi may require a suspension of disbelief, e.g. star drives work. They should not require a suspension of intelligence, eg Gravity doesn't

It follows an unfortunate trend in the ST franchise Script monkeys (writers) who add plot lines because some accountant thinks it will make money based on some survey done in the mid-west But which are actively stupid or entirely impossible.

Spoiler alert - but if you watch this turkey (sigh) E,g - Bad guy marooned on a planet centuries ago too far away from the federation to be found or rescued. Yet 100 years later he has online access to even secret security features on a distant star city - yet doesn't think to ask anyone to come and rescue him - REALLY ????.

Particularly as the crashed star ship still works, and apparently has a gassed up and operational 20th century motor bike on board (impressive as it was 300 years old when the ship crashed) - but to continue:

He can hack into top secret files, like command cruiser override and remote control codes using 150 year old equipment - yet can't call home to be rescued.

Or how subspace communications links can be jammed by HF radio waves on (as stated in the movie) "a completely different frequency". A current comparison would be jamming microwave or LASER communications by shouting out loud, because the sound would affect it.

This movie appears to be designed to encourage a generation of morons. So far from the original Star Trek that inspired a generation of scientists, engineers and astronauts.A return to fun, and a return to form for the new version of the old Trek. The 13th Trek movie is also the second good odd-numbered instalment in a row. Lucky for some.The movie does not provide an answer to what happened to Carol Marcus (Alice Eve). She was still aboard the Enterprise at the end of Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013) when the ship left for its 5-year mission, stating that she was happy to be part of the "Enterprise family". Star Trek Beyond takes place 2.5 years after Star Trek Into Darkness, but Carol Marcus is not referenced in the movie. According to behind-the-scenes stories, Carol Marcus was scheduled to re-appear on Star Trek Beyond in the early script stages, based on ideas from producer J.J. Abrams. The movie was initially conceived as a direct sequel to Into Darkness and would follow-up on some of the plot elements introduced in that movie. However, during pre-production, writer and initial director Roberto Orci left, and writing duties were taken over by Doug Jung and Simon Pegg. When this new team chose to take the story in a totally different direction, most of the ties to Into Darkness were also removed. Carol Marcus' presence was probably omitted because they could not fit her into the new story.
