What would you do without it all? In this epic adventure, a family struggles to reunite in an American landscape void of electricity: a world of empty cities, local militias and heroic freedom fighters, where every single piece of technology -- computers, planes, cars, phones, even lights -- has mysteriously blacked out forever.
Fifteen years after a permanent global blackout, a group of revolutionaries seeks to drive out an occupying force posing as the United States Government.
This show is a complete waste of time. The acting is horrible, and after the first episode you'll wish the main character Charlie to die. It is impossible to sympathize with her. She is annoying and weepy. The idea of the show is great, but this? 15 years after the blackout everybody wears nice make-up perfect clothes.... I mean seriously DO NOT EVEN START THIS! I can't write ten lines about this show, because it is so awful that nobody should even write a sentence about it. What were the writers thinking, is this some kind of apocalyptic soap opera? Please stop making this any further, or please change the story, kill of Charlie and let us actually watch a show about a life after the blackout and help us understand why did this all happen... I don't care about Charlie and her "big" problems.
Not only is it just another end of the world type TV show with horrible tiny sets the characters are worse! Most of it shot on back roads and abandoned warehouses and what not, and what isn't is a CGI nightmare or what would appear to be the set of Blazing Saddles.
The world was hit with a man made weapon that causes everything that runs on electric to just stop working. And also seems to cause a form of mental retardation that nobody seems to mention because most everyone in this new era of man is dumb as a box of rocks. The country is ruled by bandits and militia with in a few days. All forms of order and civility fall apart because nobody know what to do without email.
It all starts with a small family of hippie pee brains trying to make energy but instead make a weapon. The husband strapped for cash tells the DOD to the shock of leftist, holier then thou wife(Rachel Matheson). They decide not to give the plans to the DOD until the wife finds out the her unborn baby may no live unless she gives this super weapon to this shady fellow from the DOD. When I say shady I mean it, if you were to give this dude a six shooter you know there would be six dead people somewhere by the end of the show.
So yeah, with all here motherly love she gives the super weapon to the last person you would give a weapon to. And guess what? planes start failing from the sky, cars are crashing, people with pacemakers are dropping dead, and hot pockets all over the planet are rotting in freezers. All of this horror, death, and mayhem so she can have another kid. Who by the way grows up to be Danny Matheson, an incompetent douche bag that can't even walk around by himself without the help of his sister, let alone being the reason for the fall of man kind. This is also the same guy that says "can I get a hot tub" in the insurance TV ad , if that tells you anything about his acting skills.
The story jumps back and forth a lot so you understand the retardation that is Revolution. It will jump back to a scene where just after the blackout where Mom and Dad let the daughter (Charlie Matheson) eat a whole carton of ice cream! But they want her to eat it slow so she remembers what ice cream taste like because poor Charlie will never have ice cream again. There is nothing in natural ice cream that you need electricity for, even freezing. Why the Mathesons decided to empty the contents of their freeze on to their counter top only for it to melt faster is beyond me. But remember these are scientists. In a similar scene you'll see dad (Ben Matheson) prepare for the journey out of Chicago. He reaches for the family handgun that is sitting on top of the kitchen cabinet just above the cookie jar in a shiny black box(good way to practice safe firearm ownership Dad). And of course mom gives him the serious leftist anti-gun look. But its OK because Mom blasts an unarmed guy in the back with the same gun later on for walking away with a Radio Flyer wagon full of funyons... Why not, she's already wiped out half the planet for her stupid son.
The main story takes place 15 years after the blackout. Charlie (the daughter) has grow up to be an avid outdoorsman (and future leader of the GLQ rights movement). Many people in the show call her a pretty face but you will probably agree that we have all seen prettier faces swimming in toilet bowls. Her character is written as poorly as the rest of the cast. And her values are in the same order as her crazy mothers. If it wasn't for her there would be a problem in the first place. In a well written story these would not be main characters, they would be the people disregarded or killed by the hero of the story... not the heroes of the story!
15 years after the blackout were burning tall ships to stop any transoceanic travel, we've destroyed the Constitution and the bill of rights. Were shooting anyone with an American Flag. Were raping, were pillaging, its dog and cats living together... It mass hysteria! (Thank you Bill Murray) And we just remembered we can harness the power of steam... Oh yeah, DUH! Why you ask? One, The retardation of the Super Weapon (the only thing that makes this story work!). And Two, The United States Marine Corp... WTF! not the whole Marine Corp, just these two guys.
SGT Miles Matheson and SGT Sebastian 'Bass' Monroe are two Marine (and secret lovers it seems) that completely forgot the whole "I will uphold the Constitution of the United States, honor, and anything that goes with it when they start and or join a militia to over throw the country they swore to protect. They even got matching tattoos I think. Up until they have a lovers spat and Miles leaves which makes Bass very angry.
But the whole time there are people that know how to turn the power back on but they don't bother. The only one that does is Rachel(psycho mom). But only for Sebastian 'Bass' Monroe (self proclaimed general)so he can power tanks, choppers, and other weapon. That oddly enough are in pristine condition while everything else on the planet has rotten away. Psycho Mom no longer surprises me, they just keep writing her actions as if they are acceptable. Showing that its OK to kill many just to save your own skin, or that of your butt ugly daughter or brick stupid son.
Guns do work. There's many scenes of characters using guns. However, the country the main characters live in, The Monroe Republic, has outlawed private firearms ownership. Most of the guns are in the possession of the authorities or criminals.
In addition, it's been commented by several characters that ammunition for modern, pre--Blackout, firearms is essentially impossible to manufacture* and thus rare. It's use is reserved mainly for important militia uses. Even rank and file militia members have resorted to using black powder weapons. A flashback scene in the first season fall finale shows fierce fighting in the early years of the blackout and General Monroe comments that they are running out of ammunition and will soon need to ration it.
*This of course doesn't explain how people in the pre-electricity era had copper jacketed bullets for use in their S&W six-shooters and Winchester rifles. Most local gun clubs have members that regularly make new ammo by refilling their spent cartridges and casting their own bullets. Not every technological ramification of the Blackout will be shown immediately, but we do see across the first season that some of these technologies do still exist. There's at least one working steam train in the Monroe Republic and bicycle are in use in some urban areas for transportation. Diesel is used to power electric engines, so just as gas powered engines do not work, neither does diesel engines.
There are some diesels that will start without glow plugs, but they are larger industrial engines. But, even so, getting such an engine started in cold weather would be very difficult as hand cranking would not be easy to accomplish. While obesity rates have increased in the modern era, and particularly among wealthier nations, obesity is by no means dependent on a modern consumer society. There have always been obese people and will always be obese people. The in story explanation is that whatever happened caused systems to fail over the course of several seconds. Some failed before others. Modern airplane controls are electronic so the rudder and flap control would have been lost along with the shutdown of the jet engines but there is no good explanation why every jet would enter a flat spin instead of just diving at high rates of speed. Pilots on one of their discussion forums claim it is hard to put an airliner into a flat spin so having all of them perform the maneuver would not have occured.
But not all modern aircraft would go into a dive. 737's would revert to manual reversion. If would make the aircraft very difficult to land but it could be done.
The real reason that the lighting was still on is that television is a visual medium and it's much more visually effective to allow the characters to look around and see the lights flickering out than it is to have them all just suddenly go out for no reason.
The cities were largely abandoned, soon after the electricity stopped. The Matheson family was shown walking away from their home, with what they could haul in a child's wagon. As they walked through the streets, they were nearly alone. Almost everyone has fled from the city.
All cities would become uninhabitable, soon after such a disaster. In the immediate aftermath, there would be widespread looting, and other violence. Then there would be shortages of food, medicine and other essentials. Within weeks, disease would spread throughout any areas of concentrated population. People would flee, to escape the violence and disease, and to seek food.
Well-built buildings can last a long time -- if they're occupied and maintained. Deserted buildings soon start to fall into disrepair, and then decay. In the second episode, we see buildings burning, and no fire departments to respond. The fire fighters have probably left -- and even if they were still there, their equipment no longer worked. It's apparent that looters have vandalized many buildings. Vandalized buildings decay rapidly.
We don't need to imagine what happens to unoccupied buildings, that have suffered from vandalism. Just search for photographs of the urban decay in Detroit, over the last couple of decades.US Governments created a nano technology that absorbs electricity. It was originally used to remove the power of a third world country as a way to quickly win a war, yet a problem occurred which resulted in a world-wide blackout.
There are several hundred trillions of these nano technology robots around the world It takes days to weeks to properly shut down a nuclear plant so that there is no meltdown of the core and years to decades to properly decommission a plant so what happened to them? Why no nuclear fallout?
It's possible they are still running or have been shut down carefully after 15 years.. The nanites that absorb electricity might be destroyed by the radiation of the fuel or there maybe a field around the plants similar to how the amulets work to shut off surrounding nanites giving the military time to shut down the plants. a5c7b9f00b
