Secret Service Agent Frank Horrigan is a fairly successful agent working for the president, yet the guilt of not being able to save President Kennedy back in the 60's still haunts him. When a lunatic assassin named Booth aka Mitch Leary begins to haunt and torment Frank with phone calls about his failure to save Kennedy and the threats to assassinate the president, Frank must take action and protect the presidents at all costs-even if it causes him humiliation. Does Frank have what it takes to take a bullet?
Veteran Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan is a man haunted by his failure to save President Kennedy while serving protection detail in Dallas. Thirty years later, a man calling himself "Booth" threatens the life of the current President, forcing Horrigan to come back to protection detail to confront the ghosts from his past.
This really deserves the prime-time TV slots it always gets, when ITV decide to air it. There are all number of thrillers, and most of them hit the average mark. And to begin with, that's how this sounded. A secret service agent has to save a president from a psycho - original eh? But there was so much more to it.
Frank's background about the ex-president he failed to save was never mentioned in the brief description of this film that I saw, so it came as an extra element to the plot. And the acting is brilliant. There isn't one main character who fails to deliver the goods, and while the plot unfolds predictably in the most part, there were small surprises along the way which kept me thoroughly engaged in the film at all times.
There are some weaknesses in the film. For instance, there was a rather weak romantic sub-plot, and the president himself was too insignificant. But the real ace-in-the-hole for this film is the acting, it never fails to be superb stuff. Out of Eastwood, and Malkovich, it's impossible to pick who the better man is.
9/10 - it stands out in the 'above-average' film collection
In the Line of Fire is an great thriller.Its realistic and yet exciting.The script is well writen,leaving room for drama and character development.The best thing in the film is the performance of Clint Eastwood(who,in my opinion, makes the best role in his career).He really brings the character of Frank Horrigan to live.The other cast members deserve the honours as well,particually John Malkovich.In overall Wolfgan Petersen has directed an fantastic thriller that should be considered as an classic. I give it 9 out of 10!!!
If you don't care about such motivations, this is a pretty good thriller, though not one you're likely to remember for very long.
The old British BBFC 15 versions are all cut by approx. 8 seconds. Several death scenes were affected, e.g. the killing with a plastic bag, the breaking of necks and a shootout. All cuts were waived for the Blu-ray release. An empty pistol is considerably lighter than one with a clip loaded, an untrained civilian might not be able to tell the difference, but someone with proficient firearms training can. This is not an exact science, however, as it does not account for chambered rounds. Horrigan could tell by the weight that there was not a clip in the pistol. There could have still been one in the chamber, but his instincts suggested there was not, and in this instance, his instincts proved right.
