After 5 years of fighting in the crusades, Robin returns to England and leads a band of outlaws to outwit the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Robin of Loxsley returns from the holy land, to find Nottingham in pieces under the rule of the new Sheriff. He leads a band of outlaws to fight the Sherrif and help the people of Nottingham, all whilst falling in love again with his ex-finance Marian.
The third and final series of this prestigious BBC-TV series has just lately finished affording time to reflect on its quality. "The Adventures of Robin Hood" I actually remember winning as a school prize at the age of 6 and I've been an avid fan of almost every incarnation be it on small or big-screen ever since.
My own favourites of all of those are Errol Flynn's timeless 1938 swashbuckling Hollywood version and 1980's Anglia-TV "Robin the Hooded Man" which portrayed our hero against a more mystical backdrop of legend and magic.
To its credit this BBC version takes little from either in attempting to carve out its own niche. So the settings are grittier and the fight scenes more realistic than the 1930's movie whilst an arch modern-ness in the handling of character and language sets it apart from "The Hooded Man's" more grounded authenticity.
Impossible to comment on so many episodes watched over a period of two years but most were packed with action, romance, athleticism and plain old good versus evil. Very few of the plots however were believable and as characters changed allegiances throughout, credibility often flew out the window. That said, all the actors seemed to put in a big committed effort to the last episode (wonder if they knew this when filming it?) which saw the vanquishing of all things evil in Nottingham, including the dastardly Sheriff and his predecessor, Gisborne's treacherous sister Isabella, who herself has the last laugh by accounting for Robin's death with some slow-acting poison. This conveniently gives our hero just time to save the day, say farewell to his Merrie Men before expiring and re-awakening in a "Gladiator"-type ending, reunited with his formerly slain love, Maid Marion.
What not to like then, well for a start the political correctness of "bigging" up women's parts (in the previous series Marion has an unlikely alter-ego as a sort of masked avenging angel), while the chances of Prince John appointing a female Sheriff as happens here are of course negligible. We also get a black man playing Friar Tuck and fine as the actor is (David Harewood) you just know it's a sop to multi-cultural ism. The constant knowing use of today's vernacular in language patterns always jarred with me, too clever-clever by half, doubtless aimed at the younger Dr Who-type audience aimed at by the producers.
Of the rest of the actors, Jonas Armstrong was excellent throughout as Robin, while the best of the support came from Lucy Griffith as an alluring Marian, before she got murdered in the second series cliffhanger by spurned lover Gisborne, Sam Troughton as the devoted Much and Joe Armstrong as a sparky Alan A'Dale. Of the baddies, Keith Allen mixes campness and pantomime excess into a strangely effective mixture, while cuts Richard Armitage cuts a swarthy figure as the doubt-racked Gisborne. The special effects were mostly excellent throughout, particularly the C-Gen depictions of medieval towns and castles and no pennies seemed to be spared in costumes or crowd scenes either.
So we leave yet another Robin Hood behind in Sherwood even as Ridley Scott prepares a block-busting Hollywood movie for 2010. Looks as if you can't keep a good man down after all.
I really don't understand all these criticisms about historical inaccuracy - anyone who'd seen the trailers knew it was going to be like that. To be perfectly honest I wasn't looking for a history lesson (just in case you didn't know, Robin Hood's pretty much a myth anyway), I was looking to be entertained and for me the series delivered that in spades. As my husband put it, it's full of feats of derring do set to stirring music with a generous helping of romance and good guys versus bad guys. Overall it's just good fun.
In my opinion, the main characters are played excellently by the people playing them and it's perfect "sit back, relax and just roll with it" Saturday night TV. I loved the first series and can't wait on the next one airing later this year.
The main characters who die during the course of the three seasons are Roy, Marian's father, Marian, Meg, Alan a Dale, Guy of Gisborne, Isabella, Vasey (the Sheriff) and Robin of Loxley (Robin Hood). a5c7b9f00b
