In the south of France, former special-ops mercenary Frank Martin enters into a game of chess with a femme-fatale and her three sidekicks who are looking for revenge against a sinister Russian kingpin.
Frank Martin, played by newcomer Ed Skrein, a former special-ops mercenary, is now living a less perilous life - or so he thinks - transporting classified packages for questionable people. When Frank's father (Ray Stevenson) pays him a visit in the south of France, their father-son bonding weekend takes a turn for the worse when Frank is engaged by a cunning femme-fatale, Anna (Loan Chabanol), and her three seductive sidekicks to orchestrate the bank heist of the century. Frank must use his covert expertise and knowledge of fast cars, fast driving and fast women to outrun a sinister Russian kingpin, and worse than that, he is thrust into a dangerous game of chess with a team of gorgeous women out for revenge. From the producers of LUCY and the TAKEN trilogy, THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED is a fresh personification of the iconic role of Frank Martin, that launches the high-octane franchise into the present-day and introduces it to the next generation of thrill-seekers.
One of the hallmarks of the Transporter series is the driving sequences. While you will experience some decent chases here, there lacks a certain gravitas that the other movies managed to bring to us. It seems as though the writers chose to try and lace more story development into the franchise which, ordinarily, I would support. The problem is they don't succeed in making you really care.
One could argue that Jason Statham is a better "Transporter" and not be completely wrong, but I have never understood why there had to be only one. Surely there are others in the world who do what he does. The thing is, and this is not a hit against Ed Skrein (who did do a fairly good job, despite the ludicrous dialogue) the casting director tried so hard to find the next Statham that we just end up missing him even more. Had they decided to take this in a truly new direction, then perhaps I would have liked it.
The "love" angle just doesn't work, and the "bad guys" are too hapless to be taken seriously as criminal kingpins. The most threatening character was just a chick who barely had any lines at all... Though she, like all the women in this movie, is gorgeous. The "customers" are equally one-dimensional, and feature a back-story that is supposed to make you care, but is such a side-note that you almost forget about it until the end. I did enjoy the Dad character though, and the moments between Ray Stevenson and Ed are the most dynamic.
So... Since the story fails to really make you invested, and the characters are one-dimensional, and the action scenes don't focus on driving... Why are we supposed to watch it? Good question. Unless you simply cannot stay away from driving movies, even if they don't focus on the driving like they should, then check it out; but if you expect this to be a true Transporter flick, then skip it.
5/10 because of Ed and Ray's performances, beautiful women, and at least being willing to try some new things. 5 points lost because of bad writing, poor action sequences, and not enough focus on actual transporting.
It's sad to see this movie flop this bad, really. It really had the huge risk of at least deliver something equivalent of the original trilogy. But doing this movie without any of the previous trilogy's creative minds is really a big mistake. The people behind the creative process for this movie clearly didn't know what they were doing. They only tried so hard to recreate the Jason Statham's Frank Martin persona with the mannerisms and the unique fight sequences. But in doing so they really pitted Ed Skrein with the old Jason Statham performance, on which everyone can really choose who's the winner. Not having Jason Statham is by itself a big burden due to Ed Skrein still fails to live up to the Statham persona. The story also seems very flat, nothing new or unpredictable is being offered by this movie. And the biggest sin is the editing.there are so many editing mistakes that takes away the fun in watching the action scenes. The acting overall is so bad that I don't deign to write about each actors' performances.
The first Transporter film in seven years is moderately entertaining and reliably ludicrous in all the predictable ways, but the film’s new sharp-dressed driver doesn’t possess the effortless stoic wit of the original trilogy’s Jason Statham, which ends up making all the difference.
