"The Thinning" takes place in a future plagued by overcrowding where population control is dictated by a high-school aptitude test. When two students (Logan Paul and Peyton List) discover the test is smoke and mirrors hiding a larger conspiracy, they must fight the system to expose it and take it down.
The Thinning is set in a not so distant future where Earth is becoming overpopulated and in order to control the population, students have to take a test and the ones that fail are euthanized. When two students Laina Michaels (Peyton List) and Blake Redding (Logan Paul) discover that the tests were rigged, they need to work together to fight the system so as to expose it and take it down.
This is basically "The Purge", but without the horror or any fright. They took the same concept and tried to make it into a PG-13 thriller. There was one good twist, but that was it. The acting was pretty poor. The villain guard was not convincing and I hope to never watch Logan Paul in another movie that is attempting to be taken seriously.
I won't deny that there was potential for this film, but as it stands, the fact that the ratings for this are so high is dumbfounding and shows how low our standards have become. It felt like a college movie project and I have to assume that 16 year olds are the audience and intended audience.
This movie has an "amazing" background: each year every country must cut off 5% of its population. Let's do a simple math: 0.95^12=0.54, which means if you want to skip the thinning you have to be top 54% of all the students...which is ridiculous, for the following reason: global warming actually will benefit the agricultural production because the temperature has been risen; if UN wants to do this all over the globe then UN will no longer be exist for political reason (UN literally don't have any military power, it's just a political organization which "negotiates" some political problem, but when it comes to critical problem, it is completely useless. There is a saying that if UN wants other nation, such as US, UK, France, China or Russia, to do something, UN will be the first thing that is destroyed. Look at the "CTBT" agreement - None of these 5 nations even participated.) and the basement is so amusing that at the first sight of the movie I completely can't get into it. Secondly, if any nation wants to do that thinning...I guess the best result for the government would be disbanded - Can you imagine how many people will start to against the government? Go and watch V for Vendetta for an answer! Apparently the author of the script doesn't have any basic knowledge of how the society runs and he just "imagined" what would be happening - without any consideration of revolt or revolution. Thirdly, what the hell is the ending? You passed the exam you are in the Foxconn, you failed the exam you are also in the Foxconn (except you had an injection of physiological saline), what's the difference??? In total: this movie wasted an hour of my life.
