HITMAN: AGENT 47 centers on an elite assassin who was genetically engineered from conception to be the perfect killing machine, and is known only by the last two digits on the barcode tattooed on the back of his neck. He is the culmination of decades of research and forty-six earlier Agent clones -- endowing him with unprecedented strength, speed, stamina and intelligence. His latest target is a mega-corporation that plans to unlock the secret of Agent 47's past to create an army of killers whose powers surpass even his own. Teaming up with a young woman who may hold the secret to overcoming their powerful and clandestine enemies, 47 confronts stunning revelations about his own origins and squares off in an epic battle with his deadliest foe.
This movie will infuriate Hit-man fans and disappoint everyone else. First of all, it's not about Agent 47, it is about a girl who could, like, wipe the floor with 47, and he is only helping her discover her potential like some Italian suit-wearing Hagrid. Look, I don't have anything against girl power movies, but why did this have to be one? 47 is not a girl, and if you are making a movie about a girl, why does the title imply otherwise? This bait-and-switch will annoy the viewer regardless of his relationship with the Hit-man franchise, as will the clichés the movie bombards you with. There are moments Hit-man fans will appreciate, like when 47 wears disguises or anticipates the enemies' movements and uses the environment against them; during those moments, the movie feels the way it is supposed to feel, but they are only moments. One of those moments, though, is what lowers the movie to a whole different level. I am talking about the appearance of Agent 48, who looks EXACTLY like the protagonist is supposed to look, except that you see him for about ten seconds, right before the credits roll. I have seen some bad films, but this is the first one that consciously and deliberately gives its viewers the finger. I see no other way to interpret that scene, it is just a giant FU to the audience. Basically, they are saying, "We know exactly what you came to see. Don't think we didn't know any better. We did, we just chose to show you something entirely different because f**k you." I can't begin to imagine the motives behind that gesture, but I certainly do not appreciate it.
I saw Agent 47 last night and my reaction was meh at best. I am assuming the people who have made the Hit-man movies never actually played the game, or chose to use the tired Hollywood formula instead of creating a worthy adaptation! In the game, 47 is a cold-blooded ruthless assassin without feelings or morals. He receives his assignments and executes them flawlessly. He doesn't warm up to clichéd female characters, he doesn't attempt to justify why he is doing what he does, and he doesn't carry human baggage. He is supposed to be stealthy, sneaky, and efficient. Instead, Hollywood attempts to make him the Jason Bourne of the assassin world, which strays too far from the source material. Until Hollywood realizes that not EVERY movie has to contain an empowered female character and a moral justification for the anti-hero's actions -- we will continue to get substandard productions such as this. This movie has its entertaining moments, but fall far short of being an actual Hit-man film and ends up being a mindless B-Movie at best.
Hitman: Agent 47 is a film that bears nothing but a passing resemblance to the game that spawned it, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone, as it’s all just a cash grab, anyway. No choice but to wash, rinse, repeat: cha-ching.
