In ancient Japan, the shape shifting wizard known as Aku resurfaces and attacks the nation. When the emperor is captured, his son is sent to train throughout the world in many forms of discipline and combat. As an adult, he reunites with his mother, who gives him the sacred sword capable of defeating Aku. When the samurai returns home to face the wizard, he is sent through time into the distant future, where Aku still rules over a world filled with high technology, aliens, and other oddities that the samurai doesn't understand. Taking on the name Jack, the samurai makes a name for himself as he struggles to free the future from Aku's grasp, and one day return to his own time to stop Aku before this future comes to pass.
In the distant past, a Japanese samurai embarks on a mission to defeat the evil shape-shifting wizard Aku. Before he can complete his task, though, he is catapulted thousands of years into the future. He finds himself in a world where Aku now enjoys complete power over every living thing. Dubbing himself "Jack," he sets out on a new quest--to right the wrongs that have been done by his enemy and to find a way back to his own time so he can destroy the evil for good.
Samurai Jack is up there with some of my favourite animated series because it's a show with great action, science fiction, fantasy, animation and good vs. evil. It tells the story of an extremely skilled samurai warrior with a magic sword is sent far into the future by the evil shapeshifter, Aku and the samurai, who goes by the name Jack, must travel the world in search for a way back to the past and defeat Aku while being hunted by Aku's bounty hunters and minions and helping those in need.
It's not hard to see why Samurai Jack was a success with both critics and audiences and how it won 4 Primetime Emmy Awards. Most of the episodes are brilliant but some of my favourite episodes are "Ultra Robots", "The Beginning" and "The Spartans". And I'm also glad that they decided to bring back Samurai Jack after over a decade and make new episodes and a whole new season and hopefully it will end Jack's journey and maybe we will finally get see Jack return to the past and defeat Aku and we could also find out what Jack's real name is as well.
Samurai Jack has it's limitations. Some gimmicky shots, repetitive structures, self-satirising techniques that verge on the bizarre, and some episodes with so much potential that only disappoint. That being said, Samurai Jack also attempts something that no other show attempts: the timelessness of the journey, the many forms life takes, the humour, isolation, and scale of the world.
SJ's episodes can feasibly be watched in any order, there are no tacky developments as the writer runs out of ideas, no gaining of new powers, no new plot dynamics. Each episode tells a different story, where Jack undergoes a new trial, in a new environment, engaging with new characters. There are recurring characters, the Scotsman being the third under Aku, but on the whole this is about Jack exploring a world, remembering his history, experiencing the new and realising the importance of everything from his sword, his clothes, his shoes, and even the necessity of his enemy and something to struggle against.
Over the course of SJ Jack's relationship with Aku develops subtly, so that over time we come to realise how weak Aku really is, as well as cowardly, and how willing Jack is to indulge him. In many ways they are closer than they seem, the stereotype of the noble warrior and the evil enemy dissolves as we see the mockery Jack engages in, the sadism Aku revels in, the concessions they both make and how close each comes reveals the weaknesses of each, so that two characters that at first appear superficial, reveal surprising degrees of humanity.
The world of SJ is epic in scope, taking in as many clichés that it plays with, mimics, subverts, and incorporates in many ways to whatever end, striking the strongest balance when it appropriates the best and disregards the worst. It isn't always a balance SJ gets right, and as far as consistency SJ isn't the go-to show, but for ambition and occasional startling originality, Samurai Jack competes toe to toe with the epic poetry of old, and sometimes possesses an incredibly mature and literary quality.
But it is this inconsistency which adds to SJ's appeal, some episodes function as action shows, others as comedy, others as domestic drama, horror, short stories, exploration of environment, allegories. I can't name a show which attempts to do the same. Animation lost something important with Samurai Jack, and as a grown man I keep on hoping something will come to take it's place, but we'll see. If Jack teaches you anything it's that the struggle never ends; until it does, abruptly and unfairly.
Jack's real, birth name is never revealed. In the second Pilot episode he decides to name himself with this alternate name after a group of young men got impressed by his actions. No, though the appearance of Samurai Jack himself is believably based on the Professors design from PPG. But they don't share anything related or common things in any ways.The series is left open to interpretation. However, in the series, Jack finds a stable portal through time before he is defeated by the guardian. It is implied that Jack will return to the past one day as the portal shows his older, bearded self wearing a crown. The guardian states that it is not yet time for him to use the portal.
On December, 2, 2015, Adult Swim announced that the show would be airing a new season on its Toonami programming block in March 11, 2017. The series is once again being produced at Cartoon Network Studios with Tartakovsky as executive producer. This new season shows the continuous journey of Jack taking place 50 years since the last episode of Season 4 in a ten episode event. a5c7b9f00b
