When teenage Max McGrath discovers his body can generate the universe's most powerful energy, he must bond with the only being able to contain it - a mysterious techno-organic extraterrestrial named Steel. The adventures of teenager Max McGrath and his alien companion, Steel, who must harness and combine their tremendous new powers to evolve into the turbo-charged superhero Max Steel.
I wasn't expecting much from this movie. The least I was hoping for was to be mildly entertained with a bit of humor and bit of action but the movie is just full of people shouting over each other over the most banal of things which gets really annoying quickly. Most of the shouting comes from the lead actor playing Max and the character is quite possibly the worst conceived superhero I've ever seen. The story is predictable and the acting would be a lot more palatable if there was a little less shouting. This being said, if I was a decade younger I wouldn't have been this critical about the story and the acting so kids will probably find it entertaining.
. . . STEEL was Snuck into the Multiplexes long after its expiration date, no doubt pushed back and forgotten in an obscure cranny of the toy shelf since the 1900s or so. Mattel Megacorp.'s flick is about soap bubbles as much as it features its title toy. With this misfiring flop breaking into the Domestic Box Office Top Twelve (that is, 11th place) with a whopping gross of $2 million its opening week, Americans can expect to see COLORFORMS: THE MOVIE; LINCOLN LOGS LIVE ON; FANTASIES FROM FRISBEE; and TINKER TOY STORY opening on our Big Screens any day now. MAX STEEL's plot is so convoluted, its Exposition so spotty, and its acting so lame that viewers will be totally lost unless they've committed the whole book series to memory. Oh no, that's right--THERE IS NO BOOK SERIES. Consequently, we're all doomed. Fortunately, the MAX STEEL audience at my showing was treated to the trailer for ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY. Keeping that in mind, all of those who walked out halfway through the MAX STEEL feature cannot honestly claim that their admission price was totally wasted.
If the past is any indication, Hendler, Winchell, Bello and everyone else involved have the capacity to create interesting, original, and engaged art. Max Steel is none of those things.
