During an unfortunate series of events a friend of Kung Fury is assassinated by the most dangerous kung fu master criminal of all time; Adolf Hitler, a.k.a Kung Führer. Kung Fury decides to travel back in time, to Nazi Germany, in order to kill Hitler and end the Nazi empire once and for all.
By an extraordinary amalgamation of pure chance and divine intervention, the dedicated Miami Police Detective Kung Fury is granted a set of unprecedented and out-of-this-world martial arts skills, crowning him the undisputed King of Kung Fu. But when an unscrupulous lethal foe, the unstoppable Kung Führer, liquidates the precinct's Chief, Kung Fury will swear revenge and attempt to track down the megalomaniac assassin, even if this sends him back in time, deep into the heart of the fearsome Nazi Germany. Kung Fury. He is lethal. He is fearless. He will even the score.
An incredibly ridiculous but fun homage to cheesy 80's action movies and video-games made by a bunch of Swedes. It's all over the top and tongue-in-cheek.
It has Kung-Fu and dinosaur headed cops, Hitler (Kung Führer), T-Rex's, scantly clad viking chicks, Robot arcade machines, a Synth score, David Hasselhof and VHS tape effects. Everything is intentionally bad in this flick and that all add's to the fun.
It was crowd-funded through kick-starter and can be watched for free on YouTube (has already 23 million views). Check it out! It's only 31 mins long (but there is a full length feature in development).
A few days ago, a new short film I've never heard about appeared on Netflix. With the title Kung Fury, I was intrigued and decided to give it a look...and I had absolutely no idea what I was in for with this short film. It turns out that it's not a traditional martial arts film...nor even an untraditional one. Instead, it's an insane and ultra bizarre film!
The film is supposedly set in Miami in the 1980s--and at first, this seemed plausible. After all, the soundtrack is pure 80s....but soon I could tell this wasn't the 1980s I remember! Instead, it's like a combination of old school videogames such as Street Fighter and Mortal Combat along with television shows like Miami Vice and Knight Rider combined with healthy doses of LSD! The story is about a super-hero cop, Kung Fury, who ultimately does battle with Kung Fu Hitler after traveling back in time! But Kung Fury isn't alone...he's assisted by two machine gun-wielding Viking maidens, Thor, a T-Rex, his partner Triceracop and a super-hacker!! None of this film makes much sense...I am warning you. But it's also very funny and you just can't stop watching. It's extremely bloody and violent...but it's all very cartoony violence. And, speaking of cartoony, there's even a cartoon segment towards the end of the film that looks an awful lot like one of those 80s GI Joe cartoons!
The film is the project of David Sandberg, a young Swedish filmmaker who directs, produces, wrote and stars in Kung Fury. He got his financing through a Kickstarter program and has released the film for free on the internet. And, most importantly, it has a special appearance by the unofficial king of the 1980s, David Hasselhoff! I wish I could say more, but you just have to see it to believe it! I liked it and hope you do as well.
