The story begins with Speed Racer who is a young man with natural racing instincts whose goal is to win The Crucible, a cross-country car racing rally that took the life of his older brother, Rex Racer. Speed is loyal to the family business, run by his parents Pops and Mom. Pops designed Speed's car, the Mach 5. The owner of Royalton Industries makes Speed a lucrative offer, Speed rejects the offer, angering the owner. Speed also uncovers a secret that top corporate interests, including Royalton, are fixing races and cheating to gain profit. With the offer to Speed denied, Royalton wants to ensure that Speed will not win races. Speed finds support from his parents and his girlfriend Trixie and enters The Crucible in a partnership with his one-time rival, Racer X, seeking to rescue his family's business and the racing sport itself.
A young driver, Speed Racer, aspires to be champion of the racing world with the help of his family and his high-tech Mach 5 automobile.
The Wachowski brothers bring the hit 80s anime series Speed Racer to the silver screen, and man have they done a hell of a job.
It was clear from the very first frame of the movie that the whole thing was meant to be "cartoonish" and not at all realistic, so I can't really understand all the complains that the scenes and background looked "fake". It is exactly this tone of the movie that the Wachowskis have set which brings it closer to the heart, for anyone who had watched the TV series. I'm at best a moderate fan of the original, but I was nothing less than thrilled with this fantastic update/conversion.
Without the pressure of having to instill philosophic undertones in the film like they almost always do in their previous movies, the Wachowskis, along with Joel Silver, go full power on designing some of the most exhilarating CGI action sequences I have ever seen, much less a race sequence. After providing us with the extravagant shootout and the mind-blowing Burly Brawl from the Matrix series, the bros. once again displayed savant-like skills in using their creativity and plotting out amazing "car-fights" and the usage of a wide array of gadgets, which fans will be pleased to find out that most were taken straight from the original series.
In terms of acting, the film has a talented cast. Emile Hirsch thankfully wasn't much like the animated titular character in his portrayal, and fitted in perfect in this updated universe from the anime. The rest of the cast were modeled from head to toe to look like their animated counterparts. Even Hollywood newcomer, South Korea's pop star Rain (RAAAAAIN!) does a competent job for a blockbuster movie debut.
With all the regard for realism, few people may be able to enjoy this movie. But for those who did, like me, will have to consider ourselves truly blessed to have experienced this nostalgic hell of a ride.

'Speed Racer' is one of the most colourful (literally!) popcorn flicks of the year. Like most sports movies it starts off with a match (in this case a race) and then moves on the protagonists struggle in his professional field and then ends with one final round. Yeah, done to death story. Even though the plot is pretty simplistic and familiar there is the far-fetched subplot of one of the characters getting a facelift to hide his identity.
However, what's unique about this movie is its execution. The visuals look like those of videogames, comic books and/or children's books. The bright colours are mostly compositions of red, blue, green and yellow. It's full of energy. Although the pace does slow down during the first hour it picks up rapidly in the second half. With a cast that includes Susan Sarandon, John Goodman, Cristina Ricci and Matthew Fox one can expect more entertainment (and they are good in their supporting roles) but the show belongs to the visuals.
Arguably they do have a psychedelic effect at times and kind of make one feel weird in the head but the Wachowski brothers have done an overall impressive job with the craft. The rich colours are more likely to captivate the younger audience and the story itself is suited for the family. Overall, a good enough effort at a popcorn flick from the guys who gave us 'The Matrix' (though it's nowhere near the level of their second directorial venture).
Aimed squarely at family audiences, the Wachowski Brothers' return behind the camera for the first time since the "Matrix" trilogy is a blur of video action painting and very loud sounds notable solely for its technical wizardry. In every other respect, it's pure cotton candy -- entirely non-nutritious but too sweet and pretty for young people to resist.
Tire Shields and Hexodyne emergency spare tires In the Thunderhead flashbacks, it is revealed that Rex's testimony helped bring down UniRon, a major sponsor that was fixing races, along with Blackjack Benelli, the mobster who was enforcing for UniRon. The flashback strongly implies that Benelli had marked Rex for death in retaliation. With the racing world now too dangerous for him, Rex seems to have decided that faking his own death and working for the C.I.B. with a new face and a new identity was the only way he could continue. The film shows, in the exploding go-kart scene, that Rex (and probably Pops as well) had enemies in the racing world who were ruthless and determined enough to kill his family and friends to get to him. It also shows that Rex knew enough about these individuals to be a danger to them. Rex left home to protect his family, and he never told them the truth about his reasons and activities in an effort to continue protecting them. a5c7b9f00b
