Though recognized for heroism as a lad, Ned Kelly can not escape the stigma of being the eldest of a brood sired by a known criminal. In days when an arrest equaled guilt and a conviction, his unfair imprisonment for horse thievery puts him steadfast, in the eyes of Victorian police, on the wrong side of things for life. With a sister unable to dissuade the unwanted advances of Constable Fitzpatrick, Ned, his brother Dan, and friends Joe Byrne and Steve Hart soon find themselves labeled "an outlaw gang" by the less-than-honorable constable. It's a designation they're apt to live up to after Ned's mother is unfairly arrested and sentenced to three years hard labor. In retaliation, the Kelly Gang strikes out against the oppressive Victorian government, with ultimately tragic results and passage into Australian folklore.
An innocent man becomes one of the most wanted criminals the world has ever known.
I got cold feet about this movie at the last minute. Always a review-slut, some of the luke warm responses to this film got me worried. I shouldn't have been. I was pleasantly surprised in every sense by what was a touching, humourous and sometimes extremely moving film.
The film was well executed, well made, and tight in most respects. Sure it did take the easy options in some of its themes (irish oppressed, english all evil!) but there is little doubt this is how Ned would have viewed it, and the film is narrated from his point of view. I loved the narration (which is a technique I usually loathe) but Ledger's lyrical and softspoken voice and beautiful reflections really haunted the film and gave it the melancholy atmosphere I particularly liked.
Ledger's acting was a pleasant surprise. There is no doubt when watching him how much he believed in who he was playing. The rest of the Kelly gang needed perhaps more screen time but they do well as his loyal posse.
Humour was used particularly well in this movie; never inappropriate and well spaced throughout the film. Many loved Griffits cameo and it did make me laugh, but it was the general Irish expressions between the gang which I found less hammy and more touching. And the camel (!)
There are of course some things which were not perfect. The constant shots of the Australian bush for one. (Yes we know what country they are in!)The swimming shot and medal flash back at the end was a narrative device we have all seen before to tie up a film neatly, but just ends up being corny. (but I did love the idea of Ned's obsession which the fact that he could save lives as well as take them, but the end flash back just wasn't needed to get this idea across: we got it!).
Despite this the film really entertained me. It may be a safe version of the story but it is incredibly well crafted; which made for enjoyable cinema. Moral of this story: next time I'm seeing a movie before i get nervous about what others are saying. Which probably means you yourself should ignore this rambling.
Anyone who thought Luc Besson's take on Joan of Arc was biased, think again. Gregor Jordan's film, Ned Kelly' is so contrived and has so many plot holes, it amazed me at how this Australian icon has been transformed into Hollywood's version martyr.
The cast all do their best in the film but Naomi Watts' fictitious character and fictitious romance with Kelly seems forced and unnecessary. And the plot hinges on the fact that Kelly was with her when a cop said he shot at him. So if Watts' character wasn't real, where was Kelly at the time this happened? Due to the screenplay, which wasn't up to scratch, it fails to convince that the situation was so desperate that these people were forced to do this.
The Kelly family's ordeal seem to be blown way out of proportion and if this is how it happened (which I'm sure it isn't), I couldn't believe that these so-called outlaws were reduced to their actions at the end. I also didn't by into the fact that all police back then were sexist drunks.
The look of the film also really annoyed me - so much for sunny Australia. The constant shots of indigenous plants and animals grew tiresome and seemed like it was straight from an Australian tourism brochure as a way of telling overseas audiences of a nice place to plan their next holiday. Anyone who's seen 'Titanic' more than once will recognise a huge similarity with the musical score in this film it becomes very annoying.
I tried really hard to like this film and I wanted to, but it was just so over the top, you couldn't take it seriously. By then end, I had so distanced myself from the characters, I felt nothing in the final shoot-out except for how the filmmakers were desperately trying to get some tears from the audience - they failed. Ned Kelly' is a major disappointment.
4 out of 10.
It’s an exciting movie filled with plenty of action, adventure, beautiful cinematography and best of all, terrific performances.
