In the year 2258, it is ten years after the Earth-Minbari War. Commander Sinclair takes command of a giant five-mile-long cylindrical space station, orbiting a planet in neutral space. At a crossroads of interstellar commerce and diplomacy, Cmdr Sinclair (2d season Captain Sheridan) must try to establish peace and prosperity between various interstellar empires, all the while fighting forces from within the Earth Alliance. It is a precarious command, particularly given that sabotage led to the destruction of Babylon stations 1, 2, and 3 and 4 vanished without trace.
In the mid 23rd Century, the Earth Alliance space station Babylon 5, located in neutral territory, is a major focal point for political intrigue, racial tensions and various wars over the course of five years.
I read a lot of comments about B5 being someone's favorite SF TV series. I long ago decided that it transcended that and was my favorite TV series of all time, regardless of genre. Now that I can buy it on DVD and can conveniently experience the whole scope of the story, I have to say it really is among my favorite dramas. SF, as a genre, provides a unique opportunity to explore topics at sufficient distance to illuminate basic truths. Where we might find real-life dramas dealing with the same subjects "preachy", the unreality of SF frees us from many of our petty prejudices and parochial perspectives.
B5 has been described as "Lord of the Rings" in outer space, and that's not a bad description. The issues are the same - epic events on a grand scale and the efforts of individuals to influence the outcome of things greater than themselves. The format, a five-year "super mini-series", was uniquely suited to this kind of story telling. What a pity that Peter Jackson couldn't have done the same with LOTR - he could have left in much more of what he had to sacrifice to fit the story into three feature length films.
OK, details... The cast is superb, the writing is generally excellent, and the sense of place is perfect. Special kudos to Andreas Katsulas as G'kar, Peter Jurasik as Londo, and Mira Furlan as Delenn. Each evolves over the course of the story to become quite a different person than when we first meet them. G'kar evolves from a petty bully to a spiritual leader. Londo evolves from a buffoon to one of the most tragic figures ever seen. Delenn is always a wonder to watch - from her beginnings as a somewhat timid religious minion to whatever roles she needs to fill, warrior, nurturer, lover, and seer. Unlike many shows, the secondary characters are equally well played and written and, like the principles, they too evolve as circumstances and their own choices dictate. One other individual is due special praise, Christopher Franke whose background music scoring is excellent!
At its worst, B5 is excellent SF. At its best, it's absolutely stunning. When it moved from syndication to cable for its final season was when I bought my satellite TV system just so I could watch it for one more year. I've seen every episode at least a half dozen times and I still don't tire of it.
Update:
It's now 2008 and I just finished watching the entire series again. Over the years, my list of favorite films and TV shows has changed as some new entries joined and some old favorites just didn't hold up. Interestingly, my two favorite "films" are both serialized dramas which would be too long to fit into a single film, Lord of the Rings" and "Babylon 5". Both have similar issues, scale, and characters.
"Babylon 5" is one of the finest works ever put on film, and certainly the best TV show of all time, regardless of genre. Rewatching it now, many years removed from my first viewing, and even knowing everything that happens in advance, it still affects me like few other shows ever have. I'm truly in awe of the talent and commitment that went into making it, both in front of and behind the camera.
Terrific show, esp. the seasons from when Boxleitner came in, til when the Shadow Wars ended. Incredible stuff; the highlight of the series has to be the 'Swan Dive' episode, where Bruce B jumps about 5 miles into the midst of a great chasm on the Shadows world, and calls down a ton of missiles at that moment....Moving, terrific plots, fine FX, Ivanova/Garibaldi and the MinBarri(excuse my spelling) all were finely drawn, acted characters.
I always felt it dragged somewhat when they went into the Earth/Mars thing afterwards, but nothing can diminish what takes place before.
And besides, what other Sci-fi shows would have David Warner come in looking for the Holy Grail, or Micheal York doing his King Arthur bit, or show the Vorlons as being angelics? C'mon-Star Trek would have either tried to explain it away or not dared to it. This show embraced a spiritual side, and for that-I thank them.
***1/2 outta ****, well worth your time.
-Both shows featured female seconds in command who were hot tempered: Kira Nerys on Deep Space Nine and Susan Ivanova on Babylon 5. a5c7b9f00b
