Since the election of Donald Trump as President, thousands if not millions of Americans are considering moving to Canada. (AmeriCanada? covers that subject in Chapter 9 with the latest information).
Most Americans do not really understand the differences between themselves and Canadians--nor do they generally care. BUT THEY SHOULD. Canada has made great strides economically, culturally, politically and educationally--to the extent there is an argument that they are now, in many cases, even SUPERIOR to Americans. One whole chapter details these revelations.
Certainly, Canadians shouldn't be ignored. Recently--following the 15th anniversary of 9/11--U.S. citizens were reminded that Canadians hosted several thousand Americans stranded on airplanes hovering over the U.S. or in transit from Europe. Villagers in the province in Newfoundland took them in for days, willingly and freely. (This is a far cry from when the Canadians--well, British North Americans then--burned down our White House 200 years ago!) during the War of 1812.)
The 9/11 response was a poignant and inspiring episode in cross border connections.
There are arguments for encouraging even closer ties, particularly economically. A prominent author (Canadian/U.S. dual citizen) even proposed a MERGER of our two countries in a best selling book. That ain't gonna happen, but other proposals for trade, political and cultural exchanges (along with much greater understanding and appreciation between the two democratic nations) could.
(Due to the unprecedented interest in moving to Canada, the chapter on pros and cons is being greatly expanded and will be finished by 11/20/2016.)
--If you are only interested in TRAVEL TO CANADA, there is a chapter on Victoria B.C. (the author has had property there).
--If you are interested in MOVING to Canada now that Donald Trump has become President--polls show 21% of Americans are considering it-- then this book is also for you, with references to further information.
--If you want to know how Canada and the U.S. have historically treated each other across borders (now rather hardened, which is too bad), this book's for you. There are plenty of suggestions on how both governments can improve matters.
--If you are concerned about how China, Russia, North Korea and ISIS might try to interdict in both Canadian and American affairs, get AmeriCanada? now! We need to forge an even stronger military alliance to combat predatory behaviors by the bad actors of the world.
No American has written a book for 40 years about how Americans and Canadians can become more cooperative, now or in the future (the last one was a New York Times Toronto Bureau chief, in 1985). Ralph Nader (who has Canadian cousins) did write a forward to a Canadian-published book about Canadian achievements in science, politics etc. But that also was some time ago.
AmeriCanada? is the consummate reference for a new era in Canadian and U.S. relations. It is inspiring, entertaining, authoritative and simply good reading by a trained journalist who has mastered a number of topics over the course of a long career. Early Amazon reviews have been excellent, and ultimately this will be judged a classic by a writer who is knowledgeable on both sides of the 49th parallel.
(Bonus: If you read it and review it we will eventually send you an autographed printed copy of the book).
