Half science fiction and half western, Artemus designs a series of interesting gadgets for James that would make Inspector Gadget proud. A lighthearted adventure series. Two Secret Service Agents, equipped with a wide array of gizmos, work for the government in the Old West. If you think I am going to talk about the stories, the direction, the photography or even the acting, you, my friend, are mistaken. Robert Conrad, who looked like a guy who did 100 pushups every few hours just to break the monotony, did all his own stunts. And that was the show. You tuned in, got cozy with the notion of a bunch of special agents who had their own train (no planes in that era) and reported to the president directly, but really it was all about waiting for the fight scenes. (And the gadgets were something Q's great-grandfather might have thought up.) It was fun and it was reliable. Factoid -- Ross Martin was pushing 50 when this show was done. Not sure whose idea it was to cast Martin as second banana in a role requiring action and stunts, but this put even more pressure on Conrad to deliver the goods each week. And he did. To my certain knowledge The Wild Wild West has never aired here in the UK. I recently purchased the first season on DVD & was so delighted by it I quickly followed up buying seasons 2,3 & 4. I was not disappointed, in fact quite the opposite. The stories are very imaginative, full of gimmicks & gadgets, usually kind of quirky & very entertaining. Despite the title, many of the episode are not really that of a western TV series & it is difficult to pigeonhole. One reviewer called it, "Have Gun Will Travel meets The Avengers". Robert Conrad is fantastic in the lead role of Jim West & his sidekick Artemus Gordon played by Ross Martin is also excellent. It has the additional bonus of guest appearing in many episodes some of the hottest babes in Hollywood at that time. An Internet website entitled "The Women Of The Wild Wild West TV Show" by Eye Of Polyphemus has listed his top 10 beauties who have guest-starred on TWWW. There are so many drop-dead gorgeous women guest-appearing in it he could easily have listed his top 100!. I wouldn't want to give any impression that the glamorous women make the show, however. They do not, but for us males the eye-candy makes a good thing even better!. Some of the villains like Michael Dunn (a dwarf playing Dr. Miguelito Loveless in 10 episodes) & Victor Buono (a superlative character actor playing Count Carlos Manzeppi), make it riveting viewing. Sadly, i have just read that its creator Michael Garrison fell down a flight of stairs at his home during the making of the second season in 1966, fractured his skull & died. Anyway i have no hesitation in saying that it is one of the best TV shows ever made & why it has never aired in the UK is utterly beyond me. I cannot praise it too highly & would recommend it to anyone. (Update.
