If he refuses, they threaten to kill his friend Tommy.This movie did not do well at the box office, and I honestly do not understand why. It is a funny movie, pure entertainment at its very best.
At first sight, the story of this movie is fairly simple (as is to be expected from a story that Bruce Willis wrote), straightforward and rather stereotyped. The good thief is pressured by a bad cop to steal one more item. But the setting, which includes the Vatican, is quite unique and the humorous way the story unfolds makes me enjoy this movie every time I see it.
Not the action movie that one has come to expect from Bruce Willis, but one of the funniest movies he ever made.Hudson Hawk is Bruce Willis' homage to Moonlighting, and then some, sans Cybill Shepherd.
H.H. starts out typical: Willis, ex-burglar, gets out of prison. From there, things proceed in unusual ways, eventually involving the CIA and the Vatican. Things spiral more and more out of control, including the plot and the actors. Its so obvious that they were having fun making the film.
Bruce smirks his way through most scenes, sharing in-jokes with the audience. He's having fun, and wants everyone to join in the fun. This goes right back to his character, the style, and the plots of Moonlighting.
Equally over the top is Richard E. Grant as Darwin Mayflower, who holds the perfect tone for someone so rich they are bored with the world.
The other actors/actresses were generally well in line with the plot and style of the movie.
If you take this movie too seriously, you won't 'get' it. If you've seen Moonlighting, your reaction will be similar. If you haven't seen Moonlighting, and are confused by the polarized reviews people give this movie, you may want to compare it to Airplane!, except that Airplane's plot was driven by the situation, where H.H. is driven by the characters.
I watched this on DVD (I own it!), and would watch it again. I recommend this movie.Merely airheaded where it should be lighthearted, Hudson Hawk offers a klutzy, charmless hero, and wallows dully in limp slapstick and lowest common denominator crudeness.Pick up a copy of co-star Richard E. Grant's book "With Nails: the film diaries of Richard E Grant". There's a section about Bruce Willis and Hudson Hawk.
