Epic Fail. Before anyone starts flipping out and saying "Oh, he doesn't like it because it's not the Walking Dead." Wrong. I'm glad it's not the Walking Dead, but it is, the walking crap. Why? Several reasons: #1 The Asylum. They've never done crap worth watching. A lot of this show is based on their previous failures, Rise of the Zombies and Zombie Apocalypse. Both of which were painfully bad to watch. #2 Stupid story inconsistencies. Perrineaus character was supposed to be a MILITARY MAN and MILITARY MEN follow orders. So he worries about a ZOMBIE BABY? Why? Who gives a damn? Leave it to rot. #3 The Zombie baby. I don't care if it's a zombie. It's still a baby. Babies have no coordination, and if they're zombies, it's even less coordination. #4 Girl in the cage. She was in there two days. Out in the elements. She wasn't dehydrated? She lost the keys? INSIDE THE CAGE? She also had a knife. Couldn't stab those zombies through the eyes? Kill them off? #5 Running zombies. I concur with George Romero (who's survival of the dead was as bad as this.) Hate them and will continue to hate this idea. I love 28 Days Later, but curse them for their influence on zombie films. #6 Most of these actors stink. Typical Asylum. Get one star who needs a paycheck as a hook, then get rid of him. Thomas Scott has really fallen to be in this trash. #7 SFX - runs the gamut from trashy bad CGI to just about decent practical stuff. Typical for anything by the Asylum.
So, will I watch anymore? Depends if I feel like wasting 50 minutes of my life. So far, this is an utter disappointment.
I don't know whether to give this show a scathing or glowing review.
I decided to try watching Z Nation on Netflix despite reading some awful IMDb reviews, and was pleasantly surprised to discover that the show had a moxie all its own.
It wasn't afraid to kill off major characters, and though the dialogue and action had a healthy measure of cheese to them (especially the pilot episode - try to get through it), somehow the cheese worked. The Murphy story arc and interaction between the characters - particularly Citizen Z and the gang - kept my interest level up, and me coming back for more.
By the end of the season 1 finale I was on the edge of my seat, cussing the fact that I had to wait months to see what happened.
Then came season 2...
All of the great cliffhangers we were left with after season 1 just magically worked themselves out, like a string of false alarms. And suddenly the elements season 1 had going for it manage to end up working against the show in season 2.
Less main characters means writers have to struggle harder to find plausible story lines, and also add unconvincing new characters who lack depth and seem wooden at best.
The acting goes from mediocre at times to distractingly bad in the case of some guest performances.
And then the plot just descends from workable cheese into complete idiocy. Face bites, 'protectresses', zombie mind control, zombie babies, zombie museums, zombie aliens and talking heads...Z Nation meanders for all but 2 and a half episodes of season 2, when the writers finally take us back to what works and set us up with another series of cliffhangers. And silly me will be back for season 3 - for another round of meandering.
Maybe these writers should stick to cliffhangers, because that's clearly what they do best.
