In this rewriting of a literary classic, Ginés claims to be the true author of Don Quixote, and that his manuscript was stolen by Cervantes! Ginés (aka Jerónimo) de Pasamonte was a true historical figure who is twice satirised by Cervantes as a character in his Don Quixote, first as a galley slave and later as a travelling puppeteer. He is presented as a pícaro (itinerant trickster or crook), and Cervantes’ satirical portrayal of him can also be seen as the rejection of the picaresque novel as a genre by 'the founder of the modern novel'. But in this novel Ginés claims to be the true author of Don Quixote, and that his manuscript has been stolen by Cervantes. So this work, presented as Ginés's autobiography, also constitutes the revenge of literary history by one of its minor (and less scrupulous) players. This is an imaginative rewriting from the viewpoint of a pícaro of several classics of Spanish literature as Ginés travels the highways, byways, inns and brothels of 16th century Spain and finally goes in search of Terra Australis Incognita, where we are treated to a lyrical depiction of Australia before Cook, through the eyes of a Golden Age Spanish imitator of Góngora. This picaresque tale is supposedly written (or stolen?) by a researcher into Hispanic literature, whose failure as an academic, a lover, and a father, is interwoven with the picaresque story and presented to us in alternate chapters. At the same time we are prompted to ask whether there is room for yet another novel in this postmodern world..
