An uptight and by-the-book cop tries to protect the outgoing widow of a drug boss as they race through Texas pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen.
Rose Cooper is an uptight and by-the-book cop whose name has become synonymous with screw-ups. She's given a chance to redeem herself one day when she is assigned to protect a federal witness, Daniella Riva, the vivacious and outgoing widow of a drug boss. As the two polar opposites race through Texas, they find themselves pursued by everyone from crooked cops to murderous gunmen. However, their greatest obstacle to making this out alive may be themselves as they learn that Cooper has now been considered a fugitive fleeing with Daniella.
It's remarkable to see Reese Witherspoon dish out the mediocre performance. It's not wholly her fault. Hot Pursuit is similar to Paul Feig films (The Heat, Spy), but without the punch. Witherspoon and Vergara fly well together. It's an instant connection. The things they do, the words they say, though, are a shambles. Situations occur that are unrealistic. Witherspoon is a by-the-book cop. Her job is to protect a dead drug lord's wife (Vergara) from bad people. Simple, yet ineffective. Witherspoon isn't believable in her role. Vergara fits in hers perfectly. Witherspoon struggles to contain the uncontrollable widow. A few jokes arise amongst the dead ones, conducted by a weak script and poorly executed set-pieces. The lead duo acting as a deer just about sums up the mood of Hot Pursuit.
Cooper (Reese Witherspoon) is a "hyper-focus" policewoman. She is allowed to leave the evidence locker to escort a reluctant high value witness (Sofía Vergara) to Dallas. Circumstances causes their plans to go awry and they become on the run, trying to avoid both criminals and cops who want them dead.
The movie is cute, but not an over powering comedy. The jokes get old fast such as Sofia's age and Witherspoon's height. Sofia wear a shirt which says "Butter my Biscuits" for much of the film while Reese boasts a red dress. They shared a kissing scene and a cat fight because that is what the writers had to stoop to to get laughs. The film had potential as Reese got to use a full southern accent, but the script flopped.
Guide: F-bomb in soundtrack. No sex or nudity.
Although Reese Witherspoon and Sofía Vergara do have their fleetingly amusing moments, this road-trip buddy comedy feels like it rolled off the cliché assembly line, offering wan laughs and familiar setups.
