When the successful rock and roll singer Ellen Aim is kidnapped by Raven Shaddock and his motorcycle gang The Bombers during a concert, the fan and owner of a bar Reva Cody writes a telegram to her brother and Ellen's ex-boyfriend Tom Cody asking him to return to Richmond. Tom meets the former soldier McCoy in town seeking for job and they are hired by Ellen's manager and boyfriend Billy Fish to rescue Ellen. Tom, McCoy and Billy travel in a car in a journey to the Battery, burning down the streets of the dangerous neighborhood.
A mercenary is hired to rescue his ex-girlfriend, a singer who has been kidnapped by a motorcycle gang.
Great entertainment! The story and dialog are a bit cheesy, but the acting, settings, and music are very well done. The final number, "Tonight is What it Means to be Young", is one of the greatest musical performances of motion picture history. And that V-back dress of Ellen Aim's in that last scene will have you mesmerized. Definitely a great musical, one of the few of a rock-n-roll genre.
The music was written by Meat Loaf, who is the king of the 10-minute radio song. And Robert Townsend appears as one of The Sorrels.

'Streets of Fire' is without a doubt, a cult favorite here in America. Rave reviews are posted here and I shall give my say on it, as well. If only 1984 knew how 'Streets Of Fire' would have a profound meeting about movies today, because it did! There are people still watching this after so many years already! I'm one of 'em. Just recently, I bought the DVD Widescreen Edition. The pulsating songs sung by Ellen Aim are great on stereo surround sound, the noise -- totally sounds like your in a steel factory, and Diane Lane looks so hot, I mean hot! She's by far the great highlight of the film, need I say more. Of course, it's Widescreen, which absolutely satisfies the filmgoer. I do have to say this film is a major helper for some stars that were still rising like developing actor Mykel T. Williamson who later we've come to know as BUBBA in 'Forrest Gump' with Tom Hanks; Bill Paxton (of TITANIC and TWISTER fame); Willem Dafoe (who's starring in the upcoming SPIDER MAN movie slated for release this May of 2002). Michael Pare didn't lived up to his name in the big Hollywood industry but should be praised for doing his best. Oh and don't forget 'I Can Dream About You' by Dan Hartman. That song is still memorable and played on radio somewhere in America in this very day. The characters are all enjoyable. You'll laugh. You'll feel poignant when you see the feelings emerge from Cody (Pare) and Ellen Aim (Lane). Overall, your gonna like it from beginning to end. So far I've watched it so many times, and not tired one bit. I grew up with this movie when it was on Cable and Television before. But now it's time to savor the moment because I have now the DVD version of the movie. Well worth spending. Cult classic certainly does big!
The disappointing thing about Streets of Fire is that it can't deliver on the promise of a tangy, sexy evening of stimulation. The failure is aggravated by the exorbitant scale of the production, which seems much too lavish for an atmosphere of B-movie squalor. [01 June 1984, p.B4]

The film was created with the intention of being the first in a series of three. Sadly the terrible commercial response to 'Streets' eliminated any possible continuation. Despite frequent requests from hardcore fans, there is little chance of any sequels seeing the light of day. Perhaps due to the fact that the part had originally been written for a man and was only slightly modified after Amy Madigan expressed an interest in playing the role, this has become one of the most frequently debated topics on these boards and sadly there is no definitive answer. Both sides of the argument can quote dialogue that they feel proves their point but no one involved with the production has ever truly taken a side to either confirm or deny the characters orientation. It is simply left for each fan to decide for themselves. However, throughout the film, McCoy smokes cigars. In the old days of Hollywood, this was a visual code that a woman was gay.
