Returning from five years of fighting in the crusades, Robin of Locksley and his manservant Much discover their beloved home under the rule of the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham. To fight the tyranny, Robin becomes the leader of a band of outlaws with Will Scarlett, Allan A Dale, Royston White, Little John, and Djaq. Meanwhile, feisty Lady Marian inspires the love of both her childhood sweetheart Robin and the Sheriff's second-in-command Sir Guy of Gisborne. Later episodes find the addition of friends and foes such as Prince John, warrior monk Tuck, village girl Kate, Guy's sister Isabella, and mysterious Archer.
Robin of Loxsley returns from the holy land, to find Nottingham in pieces under the rule of the new Sheriff. He leads a band of outlaws to fight the Sherrif and help the people of Nottingham, all whilst falling in love again with his ex-finance Marian.
Annoying is how I would rate this show. The production values aren't great (I've seen some villages walking around in polo shirts), and the acting isn't top notch, but the most irritating aspect of this show is the stagnant plot. The Sheriff is the typical one dimensional evil character, killing off a few innocent villagers each episode. Yet Robin Hood refuses to kill him because "Prince John will massacre everyone." Ha! This was a satisfactory explanation for the first episode, but to persist this rubbish throughout the first two seasons is disrespectful to the viewers. I sometimes feel like I'm watching a cartoon, where everything returns to normal by the next episode. Move the plot forward. The sheriff is tiresome as a villain.
Right, let's right this wrong: Doctor Who is NOT better than Robin Hood!!! Here's why: As a huge longtime fan of Doctor Who and indeed the Chris Eccleston series I was so glad to see Dave Tennant take over and delight us with instant classics such as "School Reunion" & "Girl in the Fireplace".
Then. . . like a hangover after the party. . . it all went so horribly wrong. . .
The last two thirds of the 2006 series were sloppy, incoherent, badly scripted, overacted (in parts) and damn well nearly undid all the good faith Doctor Who has created in its long tenure. It felt like a random, badly put together collection of poor episodes - it seldom felt like a series. Just one of many "issues" with this series (as voiced by many original fans) is the pathetic treatment of Who's second biggest baddies: The Cybermen. These wonderful villains were totally stripped of their mythology, their threat and quite simply, their "cool" factor! The Cybermen in the old series were powerful (as much as the Daleks), ruthless, sadistic and cunning. The new versions were just laughable, brainless Dalek fodder!!! Which lastly brings us onto Robin Hood. Great series which takes its time, builds up true character rapport/empathy. No, it may not provide the "quick fix" like Doctor Who but is far more coherent series for it. It's like comparing a good wine to cheap 9% lager!!!
