In the US, a child goes missing every 40 seconds. You never think it will happen to you. Until it does. Alone and scared, Karla Dyson (Halle Berry) is unwilling to leave the fate of her son's life in someone else's hands. When she catches a glimpse of the abductors speeding away, she decides to fight back. In a heart pounding race against time, Karla begins a high speed pursuit and will stop at nothing to save her son's life.
Working-class, single mother, Karla Dyson, feels the ground fall out from beneath her feet when a carefree afternoon in the park with her only son, the 6-year-old Frankie, turns into a living nightmare as he is abducted in broad daylight. Fortunately, as the desperate mother catches a glimpse of Frankie being shoved into a beat-up car, the resolute Karla will take matters into her own hands, unleashing a blind and furious chase on the Interstate highways. Promising herself that she will never stop, the pained mother will push herself beyond her limits, nevertheless, is Karla's maternal instinct enough to get Frankie back?
Good movie with lots of action, suspense and in my opinion a great movie. Halle Berry in a different role than what we are use to seeing her in but a refreshing part non the less.
I recommend everyone watch this one. You will not be disappointed and you will really enjoy it.
"Kidnap" is a bit like an orchestra with no strings or percussion. It's an uneasy blend of two genres. One genre involves an ordinary individual who catapulted into a situation for which they have no training, but must rise up against seeming insurmountable odds. "The Vanishing" and "Ransom" come to mind. The genre involves criminals who messed with the wrong guy who is willing to chase them to the gates of hell. "Marine," "First Blood," "Air Force One" and "The Equalizer" are examples. In both genres, the protagonist must call upon a range of talents and strategies. There may be unarmed fights, knife fights, gunfights, subterfuges, deception, concealment, negotiations, alliances, betrayals, footraces, car chases, chases on bicycles, etc., etc., etc.
Halle Berry plays a soccer mom whose six-year-old son is kidnapped. She spends what seems like an hour of the film's ninety-four minutes basically chasing the kidnappers in her family minivan. There are two brief fight scenes, a couple of knives are brandished, a few shots are fired with a sawed-off shotgun, a tense negotiation, an abortive effort to involve the authorities, a foot chase that ends where it began, but basically it's her and her minivan. The only love angle is the maternal love toward her son. There are telephone exchanges with her estranged husband's lawyer and answering machine. There are no sidekick, faith or doubt characters, so Halle spends a lot of time talking to herself.
What is done is done fairly well. A stunt involving a motorcycle was something I'd never seen before. A car chase involving a minivan and a Volvo seems almost like a parody of the high-octane chase scenes in many movies, but was actually done well. A Baywatch shot is memorable. They do a reasonable job with what they have, but one wishes she would get out of the minivan and steal a car or that somebody would actually use one of the weapons they brandish.
The denouement is a bit rushed, schmaltzy and suggests enough consequences to provide grist for three movies, but it's all off-screen.
Ultimately, Kidnap is an efficient vehicle for the delivery of some lean action that's frequently weakened by a scarcely whip-smart script.
