In 208 A.D., in the Han Dinasty of China, the tyrannic and greedy Prime Minster Cao Cao forces the reluctant Emperor Han to declare war against the kingdoms of Liu Bei and Sun Quan in the South of China. Cao Cao heads with a mighty army of one million soldiers and attacks Liu Bei. His advisor and war strategist Zhuge Liang heads to South in a diplomatic mission trying to convince Sun Quan to join force with Liu Bei against the powerful warlord. When Zhuge Liang meets the viceroy Zhou Yu, he succeeds in his assignment with the alliance of the two kingdoms against Cao Cao. The armies fight against each other in many battles until the final one in Red Cliff where guile, knowledge and strategy prevail.
The first chapter of a two-part story centered on a battle fought in China's Three Kingdoms period (220-280 A.D.).
Red Cliff takes place in the 3rd century China, just prior to the legendary Three Kingdoms period. Chancellor Cao Cao is on a campaign to reign in the southern warlords that have risen against the Han dynasty. Or at least that's his official reason for going to war. The southern armies form a coalition against this threat and it all comes down to the Battle of the Red Cliff.
The film is directed by the renowned Hong Kong action director John Woo and that definitely shows. The whole film has a great presence throughout, even the abridged Western version I saw to my great shame. The characters have charisma and layers, the action scenes are fantastic and it's larger than life in the best way possible. No way they had these kinds of vast, epic battles in the 3rd century with highly sophisticated formations, war machines, fortifications and tactics, but you don't let that bother you. A movie is allowed to be epic if it is done this well.
My only real regret is that I haven't managed to get my hands on the original two-part version, which is almost five hours long. The abridged version is just over two hours and it definitely feels like there are certain things missing. The scope and the grandeur are still there, but there are a lot of characters and not all them are as fleshed out as they perhaps should be. We also seem to move from one battle to another without any great pauses.
Still, even this shorter version is definitely worth a watch for all fans of historical epics.
John Woo directing a movie based on true events? I first hated the idea since his 2002 movie "Windtalkers" was a piece of sh*t, but guess what? This one is great! I was very surprise with this one. John Woo is rising from the ashes of his latests American movies he made (Wintalkers and Paycheck) and give us something bigger and better.
The characters where well made and they are all interesting without exception and specially Tony Leung which is one of the best actor (in my opinion) in hong kong and also worked with Woo in the intense and great Hard Boiled in 1992.
The story is also well explain for those who don't know a lot about Chinese culture and historical moments and its all building up that intense battle at the end.
The action scenes where epic as any John woo film but here it takes a much larger scale with the crazy slow motion that we all love and things blowing up (realisticly of course). My only complain is that here in Canada we only have a 2-3 hour movie and in china, its a 2 part movie. Overall, go see it, its a must see for Every one who loves this kind of film.
Red Cliff exudes a physical grandiosity that few movies of the past 20 years have attempted--no matter that Woo, even at his best, is still more at ease with down-and-dirty action than epic pageantry.
The original Hong Kong Version of the first movie runs approx. 145 minutes, the complete International Version 143 minutes. One can do the math. Approx. 50 percent of each movie were cut out. a5c7b9f00b
